Abstract: A hermetically sealed feedthrough filter assembly is attachable to an active implantable medical device and includes an insulator substrate assembly and a feedthrough filter capacitor disposed on a device side. A conductive leadwire has a proximal leadwire end extending to a distal leadwire end, wherein the proximal leadwire end is connectable to electronics internal to the AIMD. The distal leadwire end is disposed at least partially through a first passageway of the feedthrough filter capacitor and is in contact with, adjacent to or near a device side conductive fill. A first electrically conductive material makes a three-way electrically connection that electrically connects the device side conductive fill to an internal metallization of the feedthrough filter capacitor and to the distal leadwire end. A second electrically conductive material electrically connects an external metallization of the feedthrough filter capacitor to a ferrule or an AIMD housing.

Abstract: A capacitor is described. A casing for the capacitor has a surrounding sidewall extending to opposed first and second open ends. An inwardly extending ledge of the sidewall is intermediate the first and second open ends. A partition plate is supported on the ledge. A first lid is secured to the first annular edge to close the first capacitor compartment bounded by the partition plate, the surrounding sidewall and the first lid, and a second lid is secured to the second annular edge to close the second capacitor compartment bounded by the opposite side of the partition plate, the surrounding sidewall and the second lid. At least one anode resides in each of the first and second capacitor compartments spaced from cathode active material supported on the casing walls facing the anodes. There is also a separator intermediate the anode and cathode. Insulative seals supported by the casing electrically isolate anode leads connected to the respective anodes from the casing serving as a terminal for the cathode. Finally, a working electrolyte is provided in the first and second capacitor compartments in contact with the anodes and cathode active material.

Abstract: An EMI/energy dissipating filter for an active implantable medical device (AIMD) is described. The filter comprises a first gold braze hermetically sealing the insulator to a ferrule that is configured to be mounted in an opening in a housing for the AIMD. A lead wire is hermetically sealed in a passageway through the insulator by a second gold braze. A circuit board substrate is disposed adjacent the insulator. A two-terminal chip capacitor disposed adjacent to the circuit board has an active end metallization that is electrically connected to the active electrode plates and a ground end metallization that is electrically connected to the at least one ground electrode plates of the capacitor. A ground path electrically extends between the ground end metallization of the chip capacitor and the ferrule. The ground path comprises a conductive pin electrically and mechanically connected to the ferrule by a third gold braze. The ground path comprises an internal ground plate disposed within the circuit board substrate, and the internal ground plate is electrically connected to both the conductive pin and the ground end metallization of the chip capacitor. An active path electrically extends between the active end metallization of the chip capacitor and the lead wire.

Abstract: An orthopedic reamer cutting tool is disclosed. The reamer is constructed having a hemispherical cutting shell that extends from an equatorial base to an apex. A plurality of cutting teeth, each having a primary tissue cutting surface, extend from the exterior surface of the cutting shell. A plurality of retractable blades, each having a secondary tissue cutting surface, are supported on a rotatable cam positioned at the base of the shell. Rotation of the cam in one of a clockwise or counterclockwise direction causes the retractable blades to extend through respective slits that extend through the thickness of the reamer shell. Rotation of the cam in the opposite direction causes the retractable blades to retract through the slits, back into the interior of the shell.

Abstract: A hermetically sealed feedthrough for attachment to an active implantable medical device includes a dielectric substrate configured to be hermetically sealed to a ferrule or an AIMD housing. A via hole is disposed through the dielectric substrate from a body fluid side to a device side. A conductive fill is disposed within the via hole forming a filled via electrically conductive between the body fluid side and the device side. A conductive insert is at least partially disposed within the conductive fill. Then, the conductive fill and the conductive insert are co-fired with the dielectric substrate to form a hermetically sealed and electrically conductive pathway through the dielectric substrate between the body fluid side and the device side.

Abstract: A hermetically sealed feedthrough subassembly attachable to an active implantable medical device includes a first conductive leadwire extending from a first end to a second end, the first conductive leadwire first end disposed past a device side of an insulator body. A feedthrough filter capacitor is disposed on the device side. A second conductive leadwire is disposed on the device side having a second conductive leadwire first end at least partially disposed within a first passageway of the feedthrough filter capacitor and having a second conductive leadwire second end disposed past the feedthrough filter capacitor configured to be connectable to AIMD internal electronics. The second conductive leadwire first end is at, near or adjacent to the first conductive leadwire first end. A first electrically conductive material forms a three-way electrical connection electrically connecting the second conductive leadwire first end, the first conductive leadwire first end and a capacitor internal metallization.

Abstract: A capacitor having at least two side-by-side anodes with a cathode current collector disposed between the anodes and housed inside a casing is described. Cathode active material is supported on the opposed major faces of the current collector and the current collector/cathode active material subassembly is housed in a first separator envelope. The first separator envelope is positioned between the side-by-side anodes and this electrode assembly is then contained in a second separator envelope. The two anodes can be connected in parallel inside or outside casing, or they can be unconnected to each other. There is also cathode active material supported on inner surfaces of the casing in a face-to-face alignment with an adjacent one of the anodes. That way, the second separator envelope also prevents direct physical contact between the anode pellets and the cathode active material supported on the casing sidewalls.

Abstract: The present invention is directed to an electrochemical cell having plate electrodes housed inside a mating “clamshell” casing. When mated together, the casing components are form-fitting with respect to the internal battery structure so as to reduce the overall size of the electrochemical package. A header assembly containing both a glass-to-metal seal opening for a terminal lead and an electrolyte fill opening is used in conjunction with the clamshell casing. The electrolyte fill opening is constructed with an elongated opening with at least two different radii. A first and second sealing element is welded within the electrolyte fill opening at different depths within the header to block the flow of electrolyte and form a hermetic seal.

Abstract: The application of a titanium hydride coating on a ceramic, preferably an alumina ceramic, as a facile and inexpensive approach to bond gold to the ceramic during brazing is described. During the brazing process, the deposited titanium hydride is first partially decomposed to form pure titanium intermixed with titanium hydride. The combination of pure titanium and titanium hydride contributes to improved adhesion of gold with the alumina ceramic without any detrimental reaction between pure titanium and gold. The titanium hydride coating can be applied by dip/spray/paint coating.
