Abstract: A sliding electrical switch (10) for use in a garment (32) has two spaced elongate flexible surfaces (16, 18), at least one electrical contact on each surface (22a, b, c, d, e, f), and a slider (20) slidable along the surfaces to cause electrical connection between the contacts. Abstract: An activated carbon air filter for use in room air cleaners and the like comprises a corrugated paper structure formed of substantially non-porous paper, preferably Kraft paper, whose surface is coated with carbon by means for example of a dipping process in which the structure is immersed in an aqueous slurry containing carbon and a binder. Through use of a particular paper thickness and channel dimensions, a highly efficient, low volume, long lifetime air cleaning filter is obtained.

Abstract: A radio communication system comprising a primary station and a plurality of secondary stations has a communication channel for the transmission of information from a secondary station to the primary station. The secondary station adjusts its output power in response to power control commands received from the secondary station, and can adjust its output transmission power at a plurality of different rates. The primary station can instruct the secondary station which of the plurality of rates it should use. The primary station determines the optimum rate for the secondary station to use by analysing the sequence of power control commands that it sends to the secondary station, and instructs the secondary station accordingly.

Abstract: In order to record and replay teletext signals using a VHS video recorder the teletext data is converted into a multilevel (quarternary) code at a lower (half) data rate. On record an encoder (7) takes teletext data from a RAM (6) and encodes it as a multilevel code at a lower data rate and passes it to the normal luninance processor (10) of the VCR. On playback the multilevel code is replayed and fed to a decoder (13) which converts it to binary code at the standard teletext data rate. This is stored in the RAM (6) and then read out into a teletext decoder (14) where clock run-in and framing code are added before it is combined with the CVBS in a multiplexer (15) and passed to an output 16.

Abstract: The invention relates to editing of video information signals recorded on a record carrier, such as an optical record carrier (3). Abstract: A radio communication system has a random access channel for the transmission of data (214) from a secondary station to a primary station. Such a channel is intended for use by secondary stations having data (214) to transmit to a primary station while not actually engaged in a call. By enabling access requests (202) to be transmitted with a range of time offsets relative to the boundary (302) of their time slot, a much greater number of degrees of freedom is available to a secondary station requesting access to a random access channel.
