Abstract: The present invention relates to rapid-curing resin formulations as well as fiber-reinforced composite materials comprising the same and their use in the manufacture of molded articles, particularly where the manufacturing process requires high throughput and where resin formulations having consistent handling characteristics (e.g., tack and flexibility) would be preferable across normal to elevated laminating environments (as defined by temperatures between 20° C. and 60° C.). The present invention further relates to a manufacturing process for preparing an article, particularly a molded article, from a fiber-reinforced composite material comprising a rapid-curing resin formulation.

The lay-up time according to the present invention is significantly reduced, allowing a reduction in the unit cost per component and/or allowing the high volume of component production desired in the automotive industry.

Abstract: An automated method for producing a fibrous preform on a tool surface. Such fibrous preform is configured to receive liquid resin via resin infusion. A disposable layer containing a small amount of radiation absorbing material is placed onto the tool surface prior to the automated placement of the first ply of dry fibrous material. Particles of a polymeric or resinous binder are applied on an exposed surface of the disposable layer to enhance adhesion of the first ply. The dry fibrous material may be in the form of elongated, narrow-width fiber tapes or broader fabrics that can be deposited onto the tool surface by an automated placement method. The disposable layer may be in the form of a flexible polymeric film, a release film, a peel ply or a polymer-coated glass cloth.

Abstract: A method for synthesizing polyacrylonitrile (PAN) polymer with a narrow molecular weight distribution is disclosed. The preferred PAN polymer has a PDI (Mw/Mn) of about 2 or less. Such PAN polymer is synthesized by controlled/living radical polymerization using a special RAFT (Reversible Addition-Fragmentation Chain Transfer) agent. Also disclosed is a method for producing carbon fibers from PAN polymer with low PDI.

Abstract: A dry, fibrous tape for use in an automated placement process such as ATL or AFP and a preform produced therefrom. The preform is configured for resin infusion. The tape contains a layer of unidirectional fibers, at least one nonwoven veil bonded to one side of the fiber layer, and at least binding materials present within the tape. The preform produced from laying down such tape exhibits a low-bulk property that is close to the final thickness of the cured fiber-reinforced resin article and no further consolidation or compaction is required.
