摘要: An occupant support (30) such as a hospital bed comprises a support structure (56), at least one component of which has a variable profile, an actuation system (100) for varying the profile, and a controller (150) responsive to prescribed profile cycle parameters for commanding the actuation system to effect a cyclic variation in the profile. A mattress (110) comprises a primary support (114) and an elevator (206) above the primary support. The elevator has a deflated state in which it cooperates with the primary support to provide popliteal support to a supine occupant of the mattress. The elevator also has an inflated state in which it withholds popliteal support. Another mattress (110) comprises individual bladders (114), some of which are cyclically inflatable and deflatable. When inflated, the bladders cooperate with the other bladders to provide popliteal support for a supine occupant. When deflated, the bladders cooperate with the other bladders to define an effective concavity that withholds popliteal support.

摘要: A mattress for use on a bed frame has a lower body section 42 and a upper body section 40. The mattress upper body section is orientation adjustable in as a function of the orientation of the upper body section of the frame upon which the mattress rests. At least part 60 of the mattress lower body section is profile adjustable as a function of the orientation of the mattress upper body section without being dependent on profile adjustment of the lower body section of the frame. A mattress replacement system includes a mattress having an orientation adjustable upper body section and a lower body section. The mattress replacement system also includes an angular orientation sensor 58 for determining the orientation of the upper body section. At least part 60 of the mattress lower body section is profile adjustable in response to the determined orientation of the mattress upper body section.

Also disclosed is a fluidizable patient support system capable of supporting an occupant weighing more than about 300 pounds and preferably more than about 400 pounds while maintaining the fluidizable material in a fluidized state and 2) a fluidized bed weighing no more than about 950 pounds and 3) a fluidizable bed weighing no more than about four times the weight of an occupant thereof. Also disclosed is a fluidizable bed in which a filter sheet assumes a taut state to support some of the weight of bed occupant. Also disclosed is a retrofit kit for retrofitting pre-existing beds to take advantage of the concepts disclosed herein.

摘要: A method for controlling performance of an MCM capable support surface having a flowpath for guiding a stream of air along at least a portion of the surface, comprises specifying a desired evaporative rate greater than an evaporative rate achievable with unconditioned ambient air, chilling the unconditioned ambient air to a temperature at least as low as that required to achieve 100% relative humidity, thereby demoisturizing the air, and supplying the chilled, demoisturized air to the flowpath. The method may also include the step of heating the chilled, demoisturized air prior to step of supplying it to the flowpath. A system for carrying out the method includes a microclimate management (MCM) capable support surface 22, a chiller 60 for cooling air to be delivered to the MCM capable surface, a user interface 42 for receiving instructions concerning desired microclimate management performance, and a controller 50, responsive to the instructions, for operating the chiller.

摘要: A bed comprises a mattress and a topper resting atop the mattress and extending in longitudinal and lateral directions. The topper has a fluid flowpath having an inlet and an outlet. The flowpath exhibits a nonuniform resistance to fluid flow in at least one of the longitudinal and lateral directions. The bed also includes a blower connected to the inlet for supplying air to the flowpath. The resistance may be a monotonically varying resistance to fluid flow in at least one of the longitudinal and lateral directions and configured to preferentially drive fluid flow through the topper so that a larger proportion of the fluid flowing through the topper flows under a target region and a relatively smaller portion bypasses the target region.

摘要: One embodiment of a topper assembly for a mattress comprises a liquid permeable cover layer, a liquid transport layer beneath the cover layer that directs liquid transport therethrough in a preferred direction, a liquid impermeable base layer beneath the transport layer, an air mover in fluid communication with the transport layer and a reservoir positioned downstream of the liquid transport layer. Operation of the air mover moves air and liquid through the liquid transport layer in the preferred direction such that the reservoir captures liquid discharged from the liquid transport layer. A related support apparatus comprises a mattress and a condition management assembly atop the mattress. The condition management assembly includes the liquid transport layer, the liquid impermeable base layer, the air mover and the reservoir.
