Psicose is converted into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural or an alkyl ether thereof in a process for the catalysed conversion of psicose, including the steps of: a. forming a feed including psicose and water or at least one alkanol or a mixture thereof and b. converting the psicose in the feed at a temperature in the range of 50 to 300 degrees Celsius in the presence of a catalyst.

A fiber comprising polyethylene-2,5-furan-dicarboxylate, is prepared by melt spinning in a process wherein a molten composition comprising polyethylene-2,5-furan-dicarboxylate having an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.55 dl/g, determined in dichloroacetic acid at 25° C., is passed through one or more spinning openings to yield molten threads; wherein the molten threads are cooled to below the melting temperature of the composition to yield spun fibers; and wherein the spun fibers are drawn to a linear density in the range of 0.05 to 2.0 tex per fiber. The invention also proves a fiber comprising polyethylene-2,5-furan-dicarboxylate having a linear density of 0.05 to 2.0 tex, wherein the polyethylene-2,5-furan-dicarboxylate has an intrinsic viscosity of at least 0.45 dl/g, determined in dichloroacetic acid at 25° C.

A process for preparing a polymer having a 2,5-furandicarboxylate moiety within the polymer backbone, and having a number average molecular weight of at least 25,000, includes a transesterification step, a polycondensation step, a drying and/or crystallizing step, and a step where the polymer is subjected to post condensation conditions, and to a polyester-containing bottle or film or fibre-containing woven or non-woven object made from melt-processing poly(ethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate), where the poly(ethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate) is obtainable by the process of the invention.

A process for the preparation of a furfural derivative includes (i) reacting a fructose- and/or glucose-containing starting material with a liquid hydroxyl group-containing organic compound in the presence of an acid to produce an acid reaction mixture including the furfural derivative; (ii) neutralizing at least part of the acid reaction mixture obtained in step (i) to provide a partially neutralized reaction mixture, (iii) separating at least part of the partially neutralized reaction mixture obtained in step (ii) to obtain a stream depleted of furfural derivative and a stream including furfural derivative; (iv) contacting at least part of the depleted stream obtained in step (iii) with a solvent to obtain a mixture of the solvent and the depleted stream; and (v) separating at least part of the mixture obtained in step (iv) into solvent containing the furfural derivative and a stream further depleted of the furfural derivative.

Thermoformed article including poly(ethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate) polyester, which polyester has a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of at least 50,000, determined by gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as standard and which polyester is semicrystalline, is prepared in a process including: providing a sheet that includes poly(ethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate) polyester, which polyester has a weight average molecular weight (Mw) of at least 50,000, determined by gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as standard and which polyester is semicrystalline; heating the sheet to a temperature above its glass transition temperature to obtain a pliable sheet; shaping the pliable sheet in a mold to a desired shape to obtain a pliable shaped article; cooling the pliable shaped article; and releasing the thus cooled shaped article from the mold.

To provide a layered polyester film having excellent mechanical properties, transparency, heat resistance, and gas barrier property. A layered polyester film including a polyester film and a thin film layer, wherein the polyester film is a biaxially oriented polyester film including a dicarboxylic acid component containing mainly a furandicarboxylic acid and a glycol component containing mainly ethylene glycol, the covering layer is formed on at least one surface of the polyester film, and the layered polyester film has a plane orientation coefficient ΔP of not less than 0.100 and not more than 0.200, and a thickness of the layered polyester film is not thinner than 1 μm and not thicker than 300 μm.

A process for the conversion of solid lignocellulosic material containing hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin, includes (a) hydrolyzing, at a temperature equal to or less than 40° C. at least part of the hemicellulose and at least part of the cellulose of the solid lignocellulosic material with an aqueous hydrochloric acid solution, containing in the range from equal to or more than 40.0 wt. % to equal to or less than 51.0 wt. % hydrochloric acid, based on the combined weight amount of water and hydrochloric acid in the aqueous hydrochloric acid solution; yielding a hydrochloric acid-containing, aqueous hydrolysate solution; (b) separating the hydrochloric acid-containing, aqueous hydrolysate solution from the lignin; and (c) heating at least part of the hydrochloric acid-containing, aqueous hydrolysate solution to a temperature equal to or more than 60° C., yielding a product solution containing 5-(chloromethyl)furfural, and extracting the 5-(chloromethyl)furfural from the product solution into an extraction solvent.

Disclosed is a method for producing a polyethylene-2,5-furandicarboxylate (PEF) raw yarn which includes a drawing step wherein an undrawn yarn, obtained by melt-spinning of a PEF-containing resin composition, is drawn into a PEF raw yarn, wherein a draw ratio in the drawing step is greater than 6.0 times.
