Abstract:
A composition and method is provided for making polycarbonate utilizing an effective amount of a binary catalyst system, comprising a phase transfer catalyst and a tertiary organic amine, as a condensation catalyst during the interfacial phosgenation of a bisphenol, such as bisphenol A. for improved phosgene utiliziation.
Abstract:
Blends of polyester-carbonates and/or polyarylate resins with polyetherimide resins are thermoplastically molded to obtain ductile, high distortion temperature articles. The polyester-carbonate resin or polyarylate resin is selected from a particular class prepared by polymerization of a dihydric phenol, and an ester precursor which is terephthalic acid, optionally with a proportion of isophthalic acid.
Abstract:
Polycarbonate resins containing repeating or recurring polymer chain units of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R represents alkyl are useful in high temperature applications, when thermoplastically molded into articles.
Abstract:
Copolymers are prepared by the interaction of a melt mix comprising a high molecular weight poly(alkylene arylate) resin with a high molecular weight polycarbonate or polyester carbonate and a catalyst, such as diphenyl phosphate. The copolymers are tough and are useful as molding compounds and are capable of maintaining dimensional stability at temperatures approaching their singale glass transition temperature. The copolymers are characterized by having substantially no content of polyester homopolymer and a ratio of arylate linkages to dihydric phenol arylate linkages of not substantially less than 20:1.
Abstract:
Polysulfonecarbonate-siloxane block copolymers provide ductile resins having high heat distortion temperatures and high glass transition temperatures. The polysulfonecarbonate-siloxane block copolymers are useful as molding compounds.
Abstract:
Epoxide-functionalized polyphenylene ethers, which may be prepared by the reaction of various acid-functionalized polyphenylene ethers with functionalized epoxides, are useful in the preparation of polyphenylene ether copolymers. These copolymers are, in turn, useful for the compatibilization of blends of polyphenylene ethers with such other polymers as polyesters and polyamides.
Abstract:
Novel compositions comprising a high concentration of one or more extended chain homopolymer, copolymer, or block polymer and certain polyphosphoric acids are prepared under conditions to exercise control of molecular weight as characterized by intrinsic visoscity. Such compositions are optically anisotropic (liquid crystlaline), capable of exhibiting excellent cohesive strength, and are especially suited to the production of high molecular weight ordered polymer fibers by dry-jet wet spinning. These liquid crystalline compositions are capable of being drawn through long air gap distances and spun at excptionally high spin draw ratios. Fibers, films and other articles formed from these liquid crystalline compositions exhibit exceptionally high physical and heat resistant properties.
