Abstract:
An optical package comprises a light source generating light having a first aspect ratio, an anamorphic light guide to receive the light from the light source, a diverter array to receive and divert light from the anamorphic light guide, and a concentrator to collect light received from the diverter array, wherein the concentrator outputs light having a second aspect ratio, the second aspect ratio being greater than the first aspect ratio. An effective height of the output beam is lower than an effective height of the light source.
Abstract:
A recycling cavity such as used in a backlight or similar extended area source includes a front and back reflector, the front reflector being partially transmissive to provide an output illumination area. The recycling cavity also includes a component that provides the cavity with a balance of specular and diffuse characteristics so as to balance cavity efficiency and brightness uniformity over the output area. The component can be characterized by a transport ratio of greater than 15% for a 15 degree incidence angle, and less than 95% for a 45 degree incidence angle.
Abstract:
A hybrid polarizer includes an absorbing element having a first major surface and a second major surface. The hybrid polarizer also includes a first birefringent reflective polarizer disposed on the first major surface of the absorbing element, the first birefringent reflective polarizer having a first pass axis and a first block axis. The hybrid polarizer further includes a second birefringent reflective polarizer disposed on the second major surface of the absorbing element, the second reflective polarizer having a second pass axis and a second block axis.
Abstract:
An optical film or other optical body has a structured surface comprising Fresnel prisms. The Fresnel prisms define a complex topography. For example, a first and second Fresnel prism may have elongated first and second plan view shapes that form a “wye” (Y-shaped) feature. Alternatively or in addition, the Fresnel prisms may be arranged such that slopes of the Fresnel prisms define one or more saddle points. Furthermore, one or more of the Fresnel prisms may have prism shapes in plan view that include undulating portions, and the Fresnel prisms may be arranged in a slope sequence that defines one or more inflection points. The Fresnel prisms may be refractive or reflective, and they may provide the structured surface with a 3-dimensional appearance.
Abstract:
A backlight that includes a front reflector and a back reflector that form a hollow light recycling cavity including an output surface is disclosed. The backlight further includes one or more light sources disposed to emit light into the light recycling cavity. The front reflector includes an on-axis average reflectivity of at least 90% for visible light polarized in a first plane, and an on-axis average reflectivity of at least 25% but less than 90% for visible light polarized in a second plane perpendicular to the first plane.
Abstract:
Polarizer stacks are described. More particularly, polarizer stacks that include an absorbing polarizer and multiple reflective polarizers, including at least one collimating reflective polarizer are described. Such polarizer stacks are capable of emitted light that is both collimated and color neutral. Backlights incorporating such polarizer stacks are also described.

Abstract:
An optical filter including a polymeric multilayer optical film is provided. The optical film has a reflection band having a reflection band edge that is, independent of location, one of a short wavelength band edge at a short wavelength side of the reflection band and a long wavelength band edge at a long wavelength side of the reflection band. The reflection band edge has a normal incidence reflection band edge wavelength that varies with location and that is a first wavelength at a first location and a second wavelength at a second location different from the first location. The first wavelength may be higher than the second wavelength by at least 2 percent.
Abstract:
A backlight includes a front and back reflector forming a light recycling cavity and one or more light source members disposed to emit light into the light recycling cavity. The front reflector being partially reflective to provide an output illumination area. The front reflector has a blue sloped transmission spectra, at normal incidence with a range among bin values from 15% to 100%.
