Abstract: A coated abrasive article maker apparatus is disclosed comprising a first web path comprising a production tool and a second web path configured for a resin coated backing. The second web path is configured to guide the resin coated backing through the coated abrasive article maker apparatus with the resin layer positioned facing the dispensing surface. An abrasive particle feeder is positioned along the first web path and is configured to dispense abrasive particles onto the dispensing surface such that abrasive particles are removably disposed within cavities of the production tool. Abrasive particles are transferred from the plurality of cavities to the resin layer of the resin coated backing when the production tool is positioned adjacent the resin coated backing.

A peripheral surface is disposed between and connects the first and second surfaces. The peripheral surface has a first predetermined shape. Methods of making the shaped ceramic abrasive particles, and abrasive articles including them are also disclosed.

Abstract: A ceramic shaped abrasive particle bounded by a base surface having a perimeter, contiguous sidewalls abutting the perimeter, and a multifaceted surface comprising contiguous facets. Each of the contiguous sidewalls abuts the perimeter, and collectively the contiguous sidewalls abut the perimeter in its entirety. Adjacent pairs of the contiguous sidewalls abut each other along respective corner edges. The multifaceted surface is spaced apart from the base surface by the contiguous sidewalls. At least one V-shaped groove extends from one of the corner edges across the multifaceted surface to one of the contiguous sidewalls that does not contact that corner edge. Less than ten percent of the multifaceted surface area is parallel to the base surface. Pluralities of the shaped abrasive particles and coated abrasive articles including them are also disclosed.

Abstract: An abrasive agglomerate particle includes fused aluminum oxide mineral bonded in a vitreous matrix. The fused aluminum oxide mineral is present in a range from 70 percent by weight to 95 percent by weight and the vitreous matrix is present at least at five percent by weight, based on the weight of the abrasive agglomerate particle. The fused aluminum oxide mineral has an average particle size of up to 300 micrometers, and the abrasive agglomerate particle has a frusto-pyramidal shape with side walls having a taper angle in a range from 2 to 15 degrees and a dimension of at least 400 micrometers. The abrasive agglomerate particles are useful in abrasive articles. The method includes contacting the workpiece with an abrasive article and moving the workpiece and the abrasive article relative to each other to abrade the workpiece.

The tetrahedral abrasive particles (16) include four faces joined by six edges terminating at four vertices (40, 42, 44, 46). Each one of the four faces contacts three of the four faces, and a major portion of the tetrahedral abrasive particles (16) have at least one of the vertices (40, 42, 44, 46) oriented in substantially a same direction.

Abstract: A method of making elongated abrasive particles includes five steps. Step 1) includes providing a mold having parallel linear grooves, partially interrupted at predetermined intervals by transverse obstructions. Step 2) includes filling the parallel linear grooves with a flowable abrasive particle precursor composition. Step 3) includes at least partially drying the flowable abrasive particle precursor composition to form an at least partially dried abrasive particle precursor composition. Step 4) includes separating that composition from the mold, thereby forming elongated precursor abrasive particles having a shape corresponding to portions of the parallel linear grooves disposed between the transverse obstructions. At least one of the first and second opposite ends of the elongated precursor abrasive particles comprises both a molded portion and a fractured portion. Step 5) converts the elongated precursor abrasive particles into elongated abrasive particles. Elongated abrasive particles preparable by the method and abrasive articles containing them are also disclosed.
