The present invention is directed towards the use of low levels of a desiccant material in a rubber compound, such as for use as a tire tread, that allows for reduced cure times of tires cured under pressure, thereby increasing tire production. The low level of desiccant material reduces the blow point of the rubber compound by substantially eliminating blows earlier in the pressure curing process, thereby allowing for the reduced cure time of the tire under pressure. In one embodiment, low levels of no greater than about 9 phr of desiccant material, which may include generally a metal oxide (e.g. calcium oxide or magnesium oxide), are provided in the rubber compound. The rubber compound including the low levels of desiccant material may be cured, under pressure, at less than 30% of full cure of the rubber compound.

In pneumatic tires, monitoring devices are more securely adhered to the innerliner of the tire utilizing a room temperature vulcanizable adhesive wherein curing is facilitated in the presence of moisture. The innerliner formulation is prepared by incorporating a material which has incomplete compatibility with the rubber of the innerliner formulation, and which has hygroscopic properties which thereby tends to attract moisture.

The present invention is directed to a rubber compound, such as for use in tires, containing one or more polyoxyalkylene amines, such as to reduce the amount of silane coupling agent conventionally used therein. The presence of the polyoxyalkylene amine(s) allows for the silane coupling agent to be present in a low percent by weight of silica without substantially sacrificing the performance characteristics of the rubber compound. In one embodiment, the rubber compound includes 100 phr of a natural elastomer, a synthetic elastomer, or combinations thereof, no less than about 20 phr silica, a silane coupling agent present in an amount no more than 8% by weight of the silica, and about 2 phr to about 10 phr of at least one polyoxyalkylene amine defined by a primary amino group attached to the terminus of a polyether backbone.

The process involves the steps of assembling and vulcanizing a pneumatic tire wherein prior to vulcanization of the pneumatic tire, one of the components is a precured rubber compound and the other is an uncured rubber compound. To control the orientation of curative groups in an elastomer formulation, in order to maximize the properties obtained in the vulcanized elastomer, cure accelerators are deposited on the surface of a fiber. This method results in a fiber type orientation of crosslink sites in an elastomer matrix, resulting in enhanced modulus properties. An added benefit of the method is the chemical attachment of the fiber to the elastomer formulation, which also results in enhanced modulus properties.
