A method for preparing ordered mesoporous silicon carbide (OMSiC) nanocomposites uses an evaporation-induced self-assembly of a precursor composition that preferably includes a phenolic resin, pre-hydrolyzed tetraethyl orthosilicate, a surfactant, and butanol. The precursor mixture is dried, cross-linked and heated to form ordered mesoporous silicon carbide material having discrete domains of ordered, mesoscale pores.

A method for grafting a polysaccharide to a surface of a cell culture article includes (a) contacting the surface of the article with the polysaccharide in a dry form; and (b) exposing the surface of the article and contacted dry polysaccharide to ionizing radiation to graft the polysaccharide to the surface of the article. In addition to grafting the polysaccharide to the surface, the ionizing radiation may serve to sterilize the article.

Even more particularly, the disclosure relates to chemically or physically cross-linked modified gums where the gum surfaces are tuned to provide cell culture surfaces with physical and chemical characteristics particularly suited for hepatocyte culture. The disclosure also relates to articles of manufacture (e.g., cell culture vessels and labware) having such matrices, methods of making and providing the matrices to cell culture surfaces, and methods of using cell culture vessels having such matrices.

The present invention relates to an ordered mesoporous carbon and method for manufacturing the ordered mesoporous carbon which is made from a surfactant, a carbon precursor, water (possibly mixed with an acid) and a water immiscible oil. In addition, the present invention relates to a method of formulating a composition which is used to manufacture the ordered mesoporous carbon. Moreover, the present invention relates to an activated carbon which is made by partially oxidizing an ordered mesoporous carbon.
