Even more particularly, the disclosure relates to chemically or physically cross-linked modified gums where the gum surfaces are tuned to provide cell culture surfaces with physical and chemical characteristics particularly suited for hepatocyte culture. The disclosure also relates to articles of manufacture (e.g., cell culture vessels and labware) having such matrices, methods of making and providing the matrices to cell culture surfaces, and methods of using cell culture vessels having such matrices.
