Abstract: A process for the formation of a deformable battery electrode includes mixing a metal component including at least one of a metal or a metal alloy, a polymer component, and a dispersant component to create a mixture. The method further includes heated the mixture to a temperature above the melting point of the metal or the metal alloy and agitating the mixture to form a dispersion of the (molten) metal or the metal alloy in the mixture. The method further includes cooling the mixture to a temperature below the melting point of the metal or the metal alloy to form a stabilized dispersion of the metal or the metal alloy. The polymer component includes a polymer having a melting point equal to or below that of the metal or the metal alloy and a glass transition temperature sufficiently low that the stabilized dispersion is deformable.

Abstract: A method of forming a composition includes adding together a plurality of particle brush systems wherein each of the particle brush systems includes a particle and a polymer brush including a plurality of polymer chains attached to the particle. The plurality of polymer chains of the polymer brush exhibit two chain conformations as the degree of polymerization of the polymer chains increases so that the polymer brush includes a concentrated polymer brush region with stretched polymer chains and a semi-dilute polymer brush region with relaxed chains that is radially outside of the concentrated polymer brush region. The degree of polymerization of the polymer brush is no less than 10% less than a critical degree of polymerization and no more than 20% greater than the critical degree of polymerization. The critical degree of polymerization is defined as the degree of polymerization required to achieve a transition from the concentrated polymer brush region to the semi-dilute polymer brush region.

Abstract: Systems and methods for Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) emulsion polymerization are provided. The ATRP emulsion polymerization comprises a suspending medium, a dispersed medium, a surfactant, a transition metal compound in a higher oxidation state, a ligand, and an ATRP initiator. The transition metal compound is capable of forming a catalyst complex in a presence of the ligand. The catalyst complex is soluble in the suspending medium and is capable of forming an ionic complex with the surfactant. The ionic complex is capable of moving between the suspending medium and the dispersed medium. A portion of the transition metal compound in the higher oxidation state within a portion of the catalyst complex is reduced by a physical and/or a chemical procedure thereby initiating a polymerization of one or more radically (co)polymerizable monomers by reaction with the initiator.

Abstract: Materials and methods for targeted and controlled addition of polymers to proteins are provided herein. For example, the methods provided herein can include contacting a protein with (i) an inactive controlled radical polymerization (CRP) initiator blocker that can reacts with amino groups on the protein but cannot serve as an initiator for polymer addition, and (ii) an active CRP initiator that reacts with amino groups on the protein and also includes a group through which a polymer can be coupled to the initiator.

Abstract: A mixture of polymers with lubricating properties is provided. The polymer can be used to produce a lubricating fluid. They can also be born on a surface or embedded in a porous material. This mixture of polymers comprises (a) a pharmaceutically acceptable bottle-brush polymer comprising a backbone with polymeric pendant chains, and (b) a pharmaceutically acceptable linear polymer. In the lubricating fluid, the bottle-brush polymer and the linear polymer are dissolved together in a pharmaceutically acceptable solvent.
