Abstract: A pre-lithiated, precursor electrode includes an electroactive material layer, a current collector, and a lithium foil disposed between the electroactive material layer and the current collector. A method of preparing an electrode to be used in an electrochemical cell is provide. The method includes preparing a pre-lithiated, precursor electrode. Preparing the pre-lithiated precursor electrode includes contacting at least a first electroactive material layer with a first surface of a lithium foil assembly, where the lithium foil assembly includes a current collector and at least a first lithium foil disposed on or adjacent to a first surface of the current collector. The method may further include contacting the prelithiated, precursor electrode with an electrolyte in the electrochemical cell, where the first lithium foil at least partially or fully dissolves when contacted by the electrolyte to form the electrode and a lithium reservoir in the electrochemical cell.

Abstract: Hybrid lithium-ion electrochemical cells include a first electrode having a first polarity and a first electroactive material that reversibly cycles lithium ions having a first maximum operational voltage and a second electrode having the first polarity with a second electroactive material having a second maximum operational voltage. A difference between the second and first maximum operational voltages defines a predetermined voltage difference. Also included are at least one third electrode including a third electroactive material that reversibly cycles lithium ions having a second polarity opposite to the first polarity, a separator, and electrolyte. A voltage modification component (e.g., diode) is in electrical communication with the first and the second electrodes. In a first operational state corresponding to charging, the at least one voltage modification component is configured to induce a voltage drop corresponding to the predetermined voltage difference providing high power density and high energy density hybrid lithium-ion electrochemical cells.

Abstract: An electrolyte membrane for a battery that cycles lithium ions includes a sulfide-based solid electrolyte, a polymer binder, an inorganic filler, an inorganic lithium salt, and an ionic liquid. The sulfide-based solid electrolyte includes lithium sulfide (Li2S) and at least one element selected from the group consisting of phosphorus (P), tin (Sn), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), boron (B), gallium (Ga), and aluminum (Al). The ionic liquid includes substantially equimolar amounts of a cation and an anion. The cation includes a complex of lithium (Li+) and an ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, an imidazolium ion, a piperidinium ion, a pyrrolidinium ion, an ammonium ion, a phosphonium ion, or a combination thereof. The anion includes an arsenate ion, a phosphate ion, a sulfonylimide ion, a borate ion, a chlorate ion, or a combination thereof.

Abstract: A bipolar battery includes N battery cores each comprising a cathode electrode, an anode electrode, and a separator, where N is an integer greater than one. N−1 bipolar plates include a first layer made of a first material, a second layer made of a second material, a center portion, and first and second sides extending transversely relative to the center portion. A battery enclosure including a cover and a lower portion including sides defining a cavity. The N−1 bipolar plates are arranged in the cavity between adjacent ones of the N battery cores and the N battery cores are connected in series by the N−1 bipolar plates. The first and second sides of the N−1 bipolar plates are one of inserted into “L”-shaped slots in the sides of the lower portion, and molded into the sides of the lower portion.

Abstract: A bipolar solid-state battery includes N solid-state battery cells. Each of the N solid-state battery cells includes M solid-state cores each comprising a first current collector, cathode active material, a separator, anode active material, and a second current collector, where N and M are integers greater than one. The M solid-state cores are connected in parallel by connecting the first current collectors of the M solid-state cores in each of the N solid-state battery cells together and by connecting the second current collectors of the M solid-state cores in each of the N solid-state battery cells together. N−1 clad plates including a first side made of a first material and a second side made of a second material. The N−1 clad plates are arranged between adjacent ones of the N solid-state battery cells and the N solid-state battery cells are connected in series by the N−1 clad plates.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides an electrochemical cell that cycles lithium ions, where the electrochemical cell includes an electrode, a solid-state electrolyte layer, and a solid-state interlayer disposed between the electrode and the solid-state electrolyte layer. The solid-state interlayer includes a plurality of solid-state electrolyte particles. In certain instances, the solid-state interlayer includes a plurality of through-holes dispersed therewithin. The through-holes have an average diameter between about 0.05 to about 100 micrometers. The solid-state interlay covers between about 50% and about 100% of a total surface area of the electrode. In each variation, solid-state interlayer has a thickness greater than or equal to about 0.1 to less than or equal to about 8 micrometers, and the electrochemical cell may include a polymeric gel electrolyte that at least partially fills voids between solid-state electroactive particle and solid-state electrolyte particles.
