    Abstract: Techniques for separating particles of interest from whole blood are disclosed. An example particle separation chip includes a first inlet on the particle separation chip for receiving whole blood and a second inlet on the particle separation chip for receiving a lysis buffer. The particle separation chip also includes a mixer to mix the whole blood with the lysis buffer to provide lysis of red blood cells in the whole blood. The particle separation chip also includes a buffer exchanger to exchange the lysis buffer for a dielectrophoresis buffer to produce a solution that enables dielectrophoretic separation of particles of interest. The particle separation chip also includes a separator coupled to an output of the buffer exchanger to separate the particles of interest from other particles in the solution via dielectrophoretic separation and deliver the particles of interest to an outlet on the particle separation chip.

    Abstract: An apparatus includes a polymer base layer having a surface. A die has a surface that is substantially coplanar with the surface of the polymer base layer. The die includes a fluidic actuator to control fluid flow across the surface of the die.     Abstract: In an example, an apparatus is described that includes a light source, a holographic optical element, a sampling apparatus, and a detector. The light source is configured to emit a beam of excitation light. The holographic optical element is arranged to convert the beam of excitation light into a plurality of beams of excitation light. The sampling apparatus is arranged to project the plurality of beams of excitation light onto a surface outside the apparatus as a two-dimensional pattern of projection points. The sampling apparatus is further arranged to collect scattered radiation emitted by the surface in response to the two-dimensional pattern of projection points. The detector detects a frequency shift in the scattered radiation.

The PCR system comprises a microfluidic cartridge having a thermocycling chamber, wherein a floor of the thermocycling chamber is substantially planar and is provided with a heater; a cooling module configured to engage with and be in thermal contact with a surface of the microfluidic cartridge; and an optical sensor configured to obtain optical signals from the thermocycling chamber. A method of performing PCR is also described.
