    摘要: An interferometer in Mach-Zehnder configuration comprises beamsplitters (10, 12) and mirrors (11, 13), which divide an optical beam whose wavefront is to be monitored into an information component and a reference component, and which recombine the information and reference components to form an interference pattern that changes dynamically at a spatial light modulator (14) in response to dynamic variations in the atmosphere through which the beam passes. A spatial light filter (15) comprising a plate with a pin-hole aperture is positioned to transmit the reference component of the beam, but with second-order aberrations being removed from the reference component prior to recombination of the information and reference components. The wavefront of the reference component that recombines with the information component is a substantially unaberrated version of the wavefront of the beam whose wavefront is to be monitored. An acousto-optical beam-steering device (20) steers the reference component in real time so as to maintain substantially continuous alignment of a maximum-intensity centroid of the reference component with respect to the pin-hole aperture of the spatial light filter (15).

    摘要: An optical signal propagated through a poled-polymer input channel waveguide can be switched to a selected one of a pair of poled-polymer output channel waveguides, while producing only very low cross-talk in the unselected one of the output channel waveguides. The input and output channel waveguides are located within a non-linear optical polymer structure so that an end portion of the input channel waveguide is disposed between end portions of the two output channel waveguides. A first pair of electrodes is positioned so as to apply an electric field across one of the output channel waveguides, and a second pair of electrodes is positioned so as to apply an electric field across the other of the output channel waveguides. The first and second pairs of electrodes can be selectively energized so as to superimpose field-dependent changes upon the index of refraction in either of the output channel waveguides, thereby enabling the signal in the input channel waveguide to be resonantly coupled to either one of the output channel waveguides as desired.

    摘要: An improved electro-optical system has a planar waveguide coupled to a photodetector through a transparent substrate. The planar waveguide is within a planar optical structure that can be part of optical communication network. The photodetector is positioned to receive light that passes from the waveguide through the transparent substrate. The photodetector can be electrically coupled to electrical circuitry along the transparent substrate for connection to a electrical apparatus. Corresponding methods for forming the electro-optical structure are described. These improved electro-optical systems can be used for terminating an optical transmission system at an end user or a local network associated with a group of end users.
