Abstract:
A process and apparatus for the dehumidification and VOC odor remediation of an air stream withdrawn from the passenger compartment of a transportation vehicle is disclosed which employs a continuously rotating wheel support and adsorbent selective for the adsorption of water and VOCs. The wheel is coated with a zeolite adsorbent selected from the low cerium rare earth exchanged zeolite Y-84, a rare earth exchanged zeolite LZ-210, a low cerium rare earth exchanged zeolite Y-64, and mixtures thereof. It was discovered that faujasites which have a zeolite structure including .beta.-cages within which are located tri-valent cations exhibit a Type 1M adsorption isotherm for water which provides a good driving force for adsorption at low partial pressures and a heat of adsorption which is slightly greater than the heat of vaporization/condensation of water. A surprisingly significant increase in the thermal efficiency is possible as a result of the lower regeneration temperature of the adsorbent and the use of novel process steps.

A desiccant cooling apparatus and process using a solid adsorbent and refrigerant wherein the solid adsorbent is selected from the group consisting of zeolite Y-45 zeolite Y-85, a low cerium rare earth exchanged Y-84 and a rare earth exchanged LZ-210, and the adsorbent is bonded directly to the heat exchange tubes within the device by a novel slip coating process resulted in significant improvements in thermal efficiency and overall performance.
Abstract:
A carousel heat exchanger is provided for air conditioning or waste heat recovery applications. The carousel heat exchanger includes a plurality of heater tubes disposed radially about a rotational axis. Each of the heater tubes is sealed and has a hollow bore which is uniformly lined with a solid adsorbent and contains a refrigerant. A baffle is disposed about the rotational axis such that to the heater tubes extend transversely therethrough. The baffle defines an outer zone to the outside of the baffle and an inner zone to the inside of the baffle and divides the heater tubes into a first internal zone of the heater tubes located in the outer zone and a second internal zone of the heater tubes located in the inner zone. A plurality of vanes is disposed radially along the rotational axis. The vanes extend transversely from both sides of the baffle, defining a plurality of axial flow segments that subdivide the inner and outer zones. A manifold moving a flow of a heat carrier into a portion of the axial flow segments in the outer and the inner zones is provided. Using the carousel heat exchanger of the present invention, particularly with an adsorbent selected from the group consisting of zeolite Y-54, zeolite Y-85, calcined low cerium rare earth exchanged zeolite Y-84 and calcined rare earth exchanged LZ-210, can result in significant improvements in cooling and waste heat recovery system power per unit-mass of sorbent, and can simplify the manufacture of sorption cooling systems.

Layered adsorbent-substrate tubes are prepared by a method comprising heating the surface of an aluminum substrate, contacting the surface of the substrate with a slurry containing the adsorbent and a binder, and heating the coatings to form hardened surfaces which can have excellent adsorption and mechanical properties in devices for cooling or heating by adsorption of refrigerating fluid on a solid adsorbent.

A non-catalytic method for extending the life of the metal parts of an automobile muffler which comprises placing an adsorbent mass, preferably of crystalline zeolitic molecular sieve, in the internal space thereof, in sufficient amount to prevent condensation of water vapor from the engine exhaust gases on the walls thereof after engine shutdown. This procedure significantly inhibits corrosion of the metal parts.

The systems and processes disclosed herein relate generally to multi bed temperature controlled adsorption for use in the recovery of sorbates that are removed from process streams by adsorption. Multi bed temperature controlled adsorber systems can include three or more temperature controlled adosrbers that operate in parallel. Each temperature controlled adsorber through a series of steps including an adsorption step, a first bed to bed interchange, a regeneration step, and a second bed to bed interchange.

Systems and processes for dehydration of a process stream in the production of motor fuel grade ethanol (MFGE) can include temperature controlled adsorption of water in the process stream, and heat pumping to transfer heat from the process stream to a heat sink using one or more stages of heat pumping. One stage of heat pumping can be achieved during the regeneration process of a temperature controlled adsorber by desorbing the adsorbed water at a thermal condition enabling useful heat recovery. Another stage of heat pumping can be achieved during the adsorption process of a temperature controlled adsorber by transferring the heat of water adsorption to a heat sink. The heat sink with respect to each stage of heat pumping can be a solids separation unit, such as a beer column.

Systems and processes are provided that relate to the recovery of sorbates in processes utilizing temperature controlled adsorption. Sorbate recovery can include providing a temperature controlled adsorber that is undergoing a regeneration cycle after undergoing an adsorption cycle. The temperature controlled adsorber can have one or more adsorption flow passages and one or more heat transfer flow passages. The one or more adsorption flow passages can contain an adsorptive material coating with a sorbate adsorbed thereto. A heating fluid can be provided to the one or more heat transfer flow passages of the temperature controlled adsorber. A regeneration stream can be provided to the one or more adsorption flow passages of the temperature controlled adsorber. The adsorptive material coating can be regenerated by removing the sorbate from the temperature controlled adsorber to produce a regeneration effluent stream.

The present invention provides a process for applying a coating on a heat exchanger or a temperature controlled adsorber surface. This coating comprises a zeolite, an organic solvent, an organic siloxane resin that constitutes a binder and a plasticizing agent.

This invention provides a compact heat exchanger that has an effective geometry for heat transfer operations regardless of the heat conductivity of the material chosen for the fin materials. It has further been found that the use of adsorbent coated anodized aluminum for fin materials provides for a very efficient heat exchanger.
