Abstract: A method of preparing an activated charcoal can include obtaining palm leaves; grinding the palm leaves; refluxing the ground palm leaves with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) to obtain a basic solution; draining the basic solution from the palm leaves; washing and drying the ground palm leaves; refluxing the dried ground palm leaves with potassium permanganate (KMnO4) to obtain a reaction mixture; heating the reaction mixture; washing the reaction mixture with hydrochloric acid (HCl); and drying the reaction mixture to obtain activated carbon. A method of removing a pollutant from an aqueous solution includes contacting the activated carbon as prepared in with the aqueous solution to remove organic dyes.

Abstract: A method of fabricating a magnetically-controlled graphene-based micro-/nano-motor includes: (a) mixing FeCl3 crystal powder with deionized water to obtain a FeCl3 solution; (b) completely immersing a carbon-based microsphere in the FeCl3 solution; transferring the carbon-based microsphere from the FeCl3 solution followed by heating to allow crystallization of FeCl3 on the surface of the carbon-based microsphere to obtain a FeCl3-carbon-based microsphere; (c) heating the FeCl3-carbon-based microsphere in a vacuum chamber until there is no moisture in the vacuum chamber; continuously removing gas in the vacuum chamber and introducing oxygen; and treating the FeCl3-carbon-based microsphere with a laser in an oxygen-enriched environment to obtain the magnetically controlled graphene-based micro-/nano-motor. A magnetically-controlled graphene-based micro-/nano-motor is further provided.

Abstract: A composite material of polyurethane foam having a layer of reduced graphene oxide and polystyrene is described. This composite material may be made by contacting a polyurethane foam with a suspension of reduced graphene oxide, drying, and then irradiating in the presence of styrene vapor. The composite material has a hydrophobic surface that may be exploited for separating a nonpolar phase, such as oil, from an aqueous solution.

Abstract: In order to provide a separating agent for liquid chromatography that is able to separate a protein using target characteristics as an index while retaining the original steric structure, the separating agent for liquid chromatography is equipped with a substrate, a recognition site including a compound that operates by recognizing characteristics of biopolymers such as proteins, and a spacer that bonds the recognition site to the substrate, wherein the spacer has an effective length to enable the recognition site to operate by reaching deep portions of the steric structure of a target biopolymer.

Abstract: A material, and filters and other structures exposed to flowing gas that have the material therein, which removes VOCs, such as formaldehyde, from the gas. The material is a porous sorbent impregnated by a metal oxide, such as manganese oxide (MnOx) nano particles. The sorbent may be activated carbon, and the manganese oxide may catalyze formaldehyde to water and carbon dioxide while the carbon may adsorb formaldehyde, both mechanisms of which remove the VOC from the air to prevent or reduce inhalation of the same by humans. The material may be combined with an untreated sorbent or sorbent treated with ionic alkaline salts.
