    Abstract: A method includes receiving, at a network control component, an enhanced subscriber profile identifier (E-SPID) associated with at least one machine type communications (MTC) user device from a home subscriber server (HSS). The method includes determining whether the E-SPID is in a first range of E-SPID values, wherein the first range of E-SPID values corresponds to a delay that exceeds a threshold, and interacting with a self-organizing network (SON) controller that interacts an operation administration maintenance (OAM) component to control and define a modified E-SPID based on network traffic and coverage in response to a determination that the E-SPID is in the first range of E-SPID values. The method further includes sending the modified E-SPID to at least one enhanced evolved node b (eNodeB) associated with the at least one MTC user device, wherein the at least one enhanced eNodeB is operable to perform access control and scheduling for the at least one MTC user device based on the E-SPID.

    Abstract: Systems described herein use a group packet data network (PDN) to support communications from machine-type communications (MTC) devices on wireless networks. The systems assign a MTC device to a group with a group identifier, the group associating the MTC device, and other MTC devices, with a customer network; receive an attach request from the MTC device; retrieve the group identifier for the MTC device; configure a bearer path between the MTC device and the customer network based on the group identifier, the bearer path including a group PDN that transports data packets from the MTC device, and the other MTC devices, between a serving gateway (SGW) and a PDN gateway (PGW); and send data packets from the MTC device over the group PDN.

    Abstract: A base station may include logic configured to determine system throughput values for a plurality of modulation and coding schemes based on data throughput values and based on a number of user equipment (UE) devices serviced by the base station; determine a modulation and coding scheme, of the plurality of coding schemes, that is associated with a highest system throughput; and determine radio frequency (RF) conditions associated with the base station. The logic may further be configured to define a Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (MBMS) area based on the determined RF conditions and the selected modulation and coding scheme and provide an update to the UE devices serviced by the base station, wherein UE devices located within the defined MBMS area are sent the update using MBMS and UE devices located outside the defined MBMS area are sent the update using unicast.

    Abstract: A communication apparatus includes a wireless transceiver that transmits data packets including background traffic data packets and a transceiver control unit that controls transmission by the wireless transceiver of the data packets. The transceiver control unit receives, prior to their transmission, all data packets that are to be transmitted by the wireless transceiver. The transceiver control unit includes an aggregation unit that aggregates all background traffic data packets received by the transceiver control unit over an aggregation period of a certain maximum duration and causes the wireless transceiver to wirelessly transmit the aggregated background traffic data packets only after the aggregation period has expired.
