    Abstract: The present invention is directed to selection of individual patient archwires by examining the patients inner arch rather than the patients teeth. In particular, a method of archwire selection comprises (a) obtaining a representation of a patient's inner arch curve (a nullPIACnull); (b) selecting an archwire shape based at least partially on the PIAC representation; (c) making an initial selection of an archwire size based at least partially on the PIAC representation; (d) selecting a final archwire size after considering something other than the PIAC representation; and (e) selecting an archwire to be used based on the selected archwire shape and selected final archwire size. Using the PIAC rather than the occlusal or labial and buccal surfaces of the teeth for archwire shape selection promotes shaping the teeth to the shape of the jaw bone and gives consistent facial esthetics plus better retention of the treatment correction. Use of a patients PIAC/jaw bone structure also facilitates automating the process of archwire selection.

    Abstract: A self-locking orthodontic bracket includes a base for attachment to a tooth or tooth band. Transversely spaced tying lugs are fixed to the base and include opposed extensions for orthodontic attachment purposes. The tying lugs present an anterior or front surface interrupted by a transverse archwire slot. A closure mounted on the bracket includes a movable cover slidably engaging the anterior surface of the bracket. The cover spans the full width of the tying lugs and has a perpendicular width greater than the width of the archwire slot across the anterior surface. The closure is supported on the bracket by a pair of guides that slidably engage opposed side surfaces of the tying lugs for opening and closing the cover. The closure can also be designed to complement the archwire slot structure between the lugs, forming a complete tube encircling the archwire across the full width of the bracket when the cover is in its closed position.

    Abstract: An elastomeric device for use with an orthodontic appliance of the type wherein an archwire is inserted in the archwire slot formed in a bracket, attachable to a patient's tooth, which has hook-shaped projections formed therein. The elastomeric device includes a unit having a closed loop portion which is stretchable over the projections for holding the archwire to the bottom of the slot, and a cap portion integrally molded with the loop portion for covering the bracket. The cap portion protects the oral cavity of the patient against irritation from the rough surfaces of the bracket, keeps food particles from becoming lodged in the crevices of the bracket, and enhances the appearance of the overall appliance by hiding the bracket from view. The elastomeric device may be in the form of a single unit or in the form of an integrally molded chain-like arrangement of such units.

    Abstract: Dental bulk blocks for cutting machining are provided. The dental bulk block is a glass ceramic block having a structure in which crystalline phases including lithium disilicate as a main crystalline phase and lithium phosphate and at least one of cristobalite and tridymite as additional crystalline phases in an amorphous glass matrix. The dental bulk block is a functionally graded material (FGM) having gradations of size in the main crystalline phase along a depth direction thereof and having no interface at a gradation value change point at which a gradation value of size in the main crystalline phase changes. The dental bulk block is useful for the manufacture of artificial dental prostheses similar to natural teeth. Therefore, the present disclosure provides the effect of reducing the time and process of manufacturing artificial teeth protheses and increasing structural stability in teams of force distribution by functionally grading physical properties.
