Abstract:
Processes for making copolymers comprising treating a reaction mixture of a monomer and a substrate comprising ferromagnetic material located in a polymeric matrix so as to polymerize the monomer in a manner that it forms a polymeric shell grafted on to and surrounding the substrate, the polymerization of the monomer being initiated by adding the components of a redox system sequentially to the reaction mixture.
Abstract:
Several metal ions, such as mercury, cadmium, copper, zinc, nickel and cobalt, may be removed from waste waters and similar solutions by treating such solutions with a cation exchanger in the presence of a polyamine. A treatment with clay minerals such as bentonite or montmorillonite in the presence of tetraethylenepentamine is preferred. The solution may be first combined with polyamine and then contacted with the cation exchanger, but in a preferred embodiment, the polyamine and cation exchanger are combined first to form a solid adsorbent and then contacted with the solution.
Abstract:
Magnesium values are selectively recovered from salt brines, even salt brines which contain competing ions such as Li.sup.+, Ca.sup.++, and Sr.sup.++, by contacting the brine with an anion exchange resin which has dispersed therein a microcrystalline structure of the formula MgX.sub.2.2Al(OH).sub.3, where X is a halide.
Abstract:
An ion exchange composition comprising an insoluble substrate of a synthetic resin having ion exchanging sites at least on its available surface; and a finely divided, insoluble material comprising synthetic resin particles of from about 0.1 to about 5 microns median diameter (with respect to volume) having, at least on their outer surfaces, ion exchanging sites which attract the ion exchanging sites of the substrate, irreversibly attached as a monolayer to the available surface of the substrate. The composition is used for removal and separation of ions, and is especially useful in liquid ion exchange chromatography. For example, a chromatographic separation of halide ions is effected with high speed and resolution by contacting an aqueous solution thereof with a bed of the ion exchange composition which consists of surface sulfonated resin beads of a styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer to the surface of which is irreversibly attached a monolayer of quaternary ammonium-bearing styrene-divinylbenzene copolymer resin particles in the hydroxy form, and then eluting the bed with an aqueous sodium hydroxide solution.
Abstract:
The invention provides a process for separating a solution from magnetic resin portions, particles and/or fines by passing a solution containing the resin portions, particles and/or fines through a bed of particulate magnetic material.
Abstract:
The invention is for a process of removing anions from an organic solution, especially one having base labile components. The process comprises modifying an anion exchange resin by treatment with a solution of a source of anions less basic than the hydroxyl anion and contacting said modified ion exchange resin with an organic solution containing anions. The process is especially useful for treating photoresist compositions.
Abstract:
A process for absorbing silver from photographic hypo solutions involves passing the hypo solution through a bed consisting of a multitude of a sponge product confined within a vessel. The sponge product is derived from an open-celled cellulosic sponge into which there has been incorporated 30% to 80% by weight of a polymer produced by the thermal interaction of polyethyleneimine (PEI) with a polycarboxylic acid. The polymer further contains an activating multivalent cation and between 90% and 300% water. Silver is eluted from the sponge product employing aqueous solutions of a complexing agent such as an ammonium compound or a cyanide compound. Following a water wash, the bed of sponge product is ready for its next cycle of silver absorption.
Abstract:
An anion-exchange chromatographic packing composition which comprises:a substrate which consists essentially of particles having cation-exchanging sites at least on their available surfaces, the particles being of a diameter of between about 1 to about 75 microns; anda liquid coating which consists essentially of a hydrophilic, water soluble, film forming resin having anion-exchanging sites which attract available cation-exchanging sites of the substrate, wherein the liquid coating is retained by electrostatic bonds on the available surfaces of the substrate particles. The invention further includes a chromatographic column and process using the described packing composition.
Abstract:
An improved tracer particle is described comprising an ion exchange core having a polymer coating thereon, the coated ion exchange core having a reaction site capable of reacting with a compound containing an oxirane group, said coated ion exchange core having been treated with a compound containing an oxirane group to react with said coated ion exchange core causing an increase in mass of the tracer particle. Preferably, the ion exchange core is labelled with a radionuclide. These particles have improved characteristics including improved stability against leaching and improved handling properties. Such particles are useful in circulatory determinations involving the injection of the particles as a suspension in a physiologically acceptable carrier or medium into the circulatory system of animals.
