This invention relates to a composition comprising a particulate polymer dispersed in a continuous phase and a process for preparing the particulate polymer. The particulate polymer is characterized in that it is prepared by contacting a polyamine with a carbonyl-containing compound. The particulate polymer dispersions can be used for preparing reinforced polymer matrices, especially where the matrix comprises urethane and/or urea linkages.The invention allows for the preparation of a particulate polymer without using organic polyisocyanate.

Stable finely-divided dispersions of polyureas and/or polyhydrazodicarbonamides in a hydroxyl-group-containing material are made by reacting (i) an isocyanate with (ii) a compound selected from polyamines, hydrazines, hydrazides and mixtures thereof in the presence of (iii) a hydroxyl compound selected from polyethers, polyesters, polyester amides, polycarbonates and mixtures thereof and (iv) a catalyst. The catalyst is a compound which catalyzes the reaction of isocyanate groups with hydroxyl groups. The catalyst is used in a quantity of at least 50 parts per million parts of (i), (ii) and (iii). These dispersions are particularly useful in the production of polyurethanes.

The present invention is directed to a polyol blend comprising a polyether polyol having at least two and no more than three hydroxyl groups and from about 5 to about 40 percent by weight based on the total weight of the two components of a dispersion of a polyurea and/or polyhydrazodicarbonamide in an organic compound containing at least one hydroxyl group, the solids content of said blend being from about 1 to about 8 percent by weight.
