The Cu--Pb alloy bearing consists of a backing metal layer and a Cu--Pb bearing alloy layer which is bonded to the backing metal layer and whose matrix contains dispersed Pb-phase grains. Within an at least 30 .mu.m thick surface region of the Cu--Pb bearing alloy layer, the Pb-phase grains comprise at least one of In and Sn in an amount or a total amount of not less than 2 wt %, respectively, which are elements added into the Pb-phase grains by migration.

A copper alloy sliding bearing of a three-layer structure comprises a steel back metal layer of a high strength, a copper alloy layer, and an overlay. The steel back metal layer contains 0.15-0.26% by weight of carbon, and the steel back metal layer has a 0.2% yield strength of not less than 440 N/mm.sup.2. With this structure, even under severe conditions of use in an internal combustion engine of a high-speed design, in which an increased inertia force is applied to the housing, the followability of the bearing relative to the deformation of the housing is enhanced, and the bearing performance such as an anti-fretting property and an anti-seizure property is excellent.

A METHOD FOR MAKING A LEADED-TIN BRONZE ALLOY OF A PREDETERMINED COMPOSITION COMPRISES HEATING METAL SCRAP TO MAKE A LIQUID ALLOY THEREOF, MEASURING AND RECORDING THE TEMPERATURE OF A SAMPLE OF THE ALLOY WHILE THE SAMPLE COOLS TO A SOLID, WHEREBY THE THERMAL LIQUIDUS AND MONOTECTIC ARREST TEMPERATURES OF THE ALLOY ARE DETERMINED, AND ADDING SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES OF COPPER, TIN OR LEAD TO THE MOLTEN ALLOY TO OBTAIN A DESIRED THERMAL LIQUIDUS AND MONOTECTIC ARREST TEMPERATURES AND ACCORDINGLY THE DESIRED PREDETERMINED COMPOSITION OF THE ALLOY. THIS METHOD IS USEFUL IN CONTROLLING THE COMPOSITION OF LEADED-TIN BRONZE ALLOYS WITHOUT USING CONVENTIONAL ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES.

MANY DIFFERENT COPPER-ZINC ALLOYS WERE NECESSARY WHEN MAKING PIPE FITTING MEMBERS BECAUSE OF THE VARIOUS PROPERTIES REQUIRED. THE PRESENT COPPER-ZINC ALLOY HAS A BROAD SPECTRUM OF PROPERTIES AND WITH THIS ONE ALLOY ALL THE COMPONENT PARTS FOR PIPE FITTING CAN BE MANUFACTURED. THE ALLOY CONSISTS OF 62-65% CU; 1-3% PB; 0.2-0.8% NI; 0.2-0.8% MN; 0.1-0.6% AL; 0.3-1.0% SI; 0.2-1.0% SN; 0.02-0.2% SB; AND THE REMAINDER IS ZINC.
