Abstract:
A swashplate assembly for an air conditioning compressor comprising a die cast aluminum swashplate with shoe bearing surfaces formed during the die casting operation, a swashplate driveshaft with a knurled portion press fitted into an opening in the hub of the swashplate and an assembly of one-price, semi-spherical sintered metal shoes engageable with the swashplate bearing surfaces for translating rotary motion of the swashplate into reciprocating motion of the compressor pistons.

Friction-reducing coating compositions and coated machine parts having a wearing surface provided with coatings of same. In one embodiment, the coating composition includes from 10 to 25 weight % molybdenum metal; from 55 to 70 weight % nickel alloy; and from 5 to 25 weight % chromium carbide Cr.sub.3 C.sub.2. In a second embodiment, the coating composition includes from 25 to 45 weight % molybdenum metal; from 45 to 60 weight % nickel alloy; and from 5 to 25 weight % of a hard substance selected from chromium metal, chromium carbide Cr.sub.23 C.sub.6 and molybdenum carbide Mo.sub.2 C. Preferably the nickel alloys contain from 73 to 95 weight % nickel and have a melting point below that of nickel metal. Preferably the friction-reducing coating is applied to a wearing surface by plasma flame spraying. These coatings impart excellent wear resistance to the wearing surface, while lowering wear of counter-running faces.

Abstract:
A miniature cryogenic system preferably operating in a manner similar to a split Stirling cycle utilizes a cold finger with a solid, low weight displacer and a stationary regenerative material external to the displacer. The regenerative material preferably surrounds the displacer and extends from a fluid inlet to a cooled end plate of a housing. The displacer has a central channel that receives an auxiliary displacer that carries a regenerative material in an internal cavity. A second fluid inlet located at the end of the housing opposite the cooled end communicates with the regenerative material held in the auxiliary displacer. The main and auxiliary displacers preferably have associated heat exchangers at their cooling ends and the cooling end of the auxiliary displacer is located to pre-cool the fluid passing from the first inlet to the cooled end plate.
Abstract:
Shoes for operatively connecting a swash-plate with the compression pistons of a swash-plate type compressor are made from a novel Cu-based alloy. Improved shoes are characterized by a combination of high heat conductivity and excellent wear resistance properties particularly when subjected to a lubricating condition so severe that no lubricating oil is supplied to the surface of the shoes at the initial period of the compressor operation. Phosphorus and elements of C group (Pb and/or Sn), as well as elements of A group (Mn and Si) and/or B group (the IVb and VIb groups of the periodic table), are added in predetermined amounts to the Cu-based alloy, so that the properties mentioned above are simultaneously obtained. The compressor according to the present invention can be reliably employed, without the occurrence of seizure over a long operational period for air-conditioning vehicles, in which the sliding condition of the shoes is drastically varied with the rotation of the engine.
Abstract:
A double acting piston pump for cryogenic mediums is disclosed. The pump includes a vertically positioned cylinder having a base portion and a cover portion, and inlet valves are disposed in the cover portion and the base portion for admitting the cryogenic medium into the cylinder and for providing a pressure component of approximately zero against the direction of flow of the cryogenic medium. Outlet valves are disposed in the cover portion and the base portion for discharging the cryogenic medium from the cylinder. A piston is slideably mounted in the cylinder and a drive rod connected to the piston extends through either the cover portion or the base portion of the cylinder. A drive arrangement engages the drive rod for actuating the piston. A housing is also provided which has a portion defining the cylinder. The drive rod and the drive arrangement are mounted in the remaining portion of the housing, whereby the housing is common to the piston, the drive rod and the drive arrangement. The pump is suitable for both liquid and gaseous mediums and generates practically no frictional forces.

The disclosure concerns cylinder barrels for piston pumps and motors which have lined cylinder bores. Each liner comprises a matrix of sintered, powdered iron which is impregnated with bronze, and which is metallurgically and mechanically bonded to the steel barrel. The liners are formed from porous, sintered iron sleeves which are placed in the bores in contact with bronze slugs. The assembly is heated in a non-oxidizing atmosphere to a temperature between 1,900*F and 2,000*F to melt the bronze and cause it to infiltrate the sintered preform and bond to the steel. Thereafter, the assembly is cooled in the non-oxidizing atmosphere to solidify the bronze, followed by air cooling to room temperature. Finally, the finished cylinder bores are machined in the bonded bronze-iron sleeves.
