Abstract:
An aqueous emulsion which crosslinks by a Michael addition reaction, yielding a crosslinked silicon modified organic composition upon removal of water has been prepared. The aqueous emulsion comprises the product formed by mixing a polymer containing at least two Michael acceptor groups per polymer molecule, water, a surfactant and an effective amount of a crosslinker containing sufficient reactive hydrogens of a Michael donor per crosslinker molecule or a precursor thereto. In order to obtain a crosslinked silicon modified organic composition upon the removal of water, the polymer or the crosslinker must contain at least one silicon atom. The invention also describes a method for making these emulsions.

Abstract:
A composition comprising a resin having latent primary amine functionality is described. The latent amine functionality is obtained by reacting a cyclic anhydride with an amine compound having two primary amine groups and one secondary amine group. The latent amine resin is combined with a curing agent having a plurality of cyclic carbonate groups in a crosslinkable coating composition.
Abstract:
A color-plus-clear coating system is disclosed. A pigmented or colored basecoat is first applied to a substrate followed by the application of a transparent topcoat to the basecoat. The transparent topcoat composition is a crosslinkable composition comprising (1) a material containing a plurality of carbamate and/or urea functional groups and (2) an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The topcoat composition provides a composite coating with improved acid etch resistance, making the composite coating particularly useful as an automotive topcoat.
Abstract:
A cationic resin having latent primary amine functionality is described. The latent amine functionality is obtained by reacting a cyclic anhydride with an amine compound having two primary amine groups and one secondary amine group. The cationic resin is combined with a curing agent having a plurality of cyclic carbonate groups in an electrocoat bath.
Abstract:
Disclosed is a curable coating composition that includes a compound having carbamate functionality of the structure ##STR1## wherein R is H or alkyl, a compound having hydroxyl functionality, a polyisocyanate crosslinking agent, and an aminoplast crosslinking agent. The effective equivalents of the aminoplast crosslinking agent is equal to or less than the equivalents of carbamate functionality and the effective equivalents of polyisocyanate crosslinker is equal to or less than the equivalents of hydroxyl functionality. The carbamate-functional resin and the aminoplast crosslinking agent provide rheology control during the early part of the bake to cure an applied coating of the coating composition.
Abstract:
Gift free coating with improved tannin stain blocking, nicotine stain blocking, efflorescencee resistance, and water spot resistance are disclosed. Pre-treated ion exchange resins are incorporated into the coating compositions to achieve the improvements.
Abstract:
The invention relates to wood coating composition selected to accentuate the color and the natural grain structure of the underlying surface of a wood article, such as, a furniture or carving. The surface of the article is coated with a waterborne system that includes a copolymer copolymerized from at least one first copolymerizable monomer and at least one second copolymerizable monomer containing a conjugate base of a strong acid. The coating enhances the reddish-yellow hues and suppress the bluish hues and grays. Such a coating is aesthetically pleasing and it enhances the natural beauty of high quality wood, such as, rose, cherry, teak, mahogany. The present method can be utilized by furniture manufacturers who plan to replace solvent borne coating compositions, such as nitrocellulose-based lacquers, with waterborne coating compositions.
Abstract:
An electrodeposition process using an aqueous coating composition comprising a carbamate-functional crosslinking agent and at least one principal resin is described. The carbamate-functional crosslinker is formed by first reacting a polyamine having at least two primary amine groups and at least one secondary amine group with a cyclic carbonate, and then reacting the product of the first reaction with a polyepoxide compound.
Abstract:
A shelf-stable fast-cure aqueous coating is disclosed. The coating contains an anionically stabilized latex, a polyfunctional amine and a volatile base in an amount sufficient to deprotonate the conjugate acid of the amine.
