Abstract: A flexible fluid collection bag is described having an upper sampling compartment of predetermined volume and a lower collection compartment partially separated by a heat seal portion, yet remaining in fluid communication with each other. To obtain a fluid sample from the bag, the bag is inverted to fill the sampling compartment, then pivotably held at the connection of the compartments while the collection compartment is returned to its original position. The fluid remaining in the sample compartment then is discharged into a specimen collection container.

Abstract: An expandable stent comprising a tubular body made up of a plurality of separated tubular elements (1) arranged along a common longitudinal axis. Each tubular element (1) comprises a plurality of rhombic-shaped closed cell elements (2) joined by circumferentially extending linking members (3). The closed cell elements (2) are expandable to allow the tubular elements, and hence the stent itself, to expand. In the direction of the longitudinal axis of the stent, the extremities of each of the closed cell elements has an enlarged loop (30) with waisted portions (33) which allow the tubular elements to interlock to create a stable structure, at least when in the unexpanded condition.

Abstract: A network device for dynamically allocating memory locations to plurality of queues. The network device includes means for determining an amount of memory buffers that is associated with a port, for assigning a fixed allocation of memory buffers to each of a plurality of queues associated with the port and for sharing remaining memory buffers among the plurality of queues. The remaining memory buffers are used by each of the plurality of queues after the fixed allocation of memory buffers assigned to the queue is used. The network device also includes means for setting a limit threshold for each of the plurality of queues. The limit threshold determines how much of the remaining memory buffer may be used by each of the plurality of queues. The network device further includes means for defining at least one color threshold for packets including a specified color marking and for defining a virtual maximum threshold. When one of the plurality of queues requests access to the remaining memory buffers and the remaining memory buffers is less than the limit threshold for the queue, the virtual maximum threshold is defined for the queue. The virtual maximum threshold replaces the limit threshold and packets associated with the at least one color threshold are processed in proportion with other color thresholds based on the virtual maximum threshold ceiling.

Abstract: A medical device, such as a guide wire, an embolization device, or a guide shaft for a micro catheter, comprises a solid and/or non-expandable core member made from e.g. metal, such as tantalum, and an outer surface layer, which is formed by electrospun nanofibers. The outer surface layer may incorporate a pharmaceutically active substance, such as a nitric oxide (NO) donor for release in the vascular or neurovascular system of a living being. The NO donor may be incorporated in a polymer, such as a polymeric linear poly(ethylenimine) diazeniumdiolate.

Abstract: A network device for minimizing latency and correcting errors associated with information transmitted from an external memory device. The network device includes a management unit for requesting information stored on at least one external memory device. The network device also includes a command unit for transmitting a request from the management unit to the external memory device. The command unit maintain at least one counter that is associated with current requests and compares the at least one counter to at least one predefined threshold in order to throttle the management unit when the at least one counter exceeds the at least one threshold. The network device further includes means for aligning information from the at least one external memory device with information transmitted from the command unit to the management unit and for ensuring that aligned information is accurate.

Abstract: The present invention is a bolus for an enteral feeding tube, or catheter, that is capable of being used in an over-the-wire intubation procedure as well as other intubation procedures. The bolus has a generally tubular body defining a sidewall, a proximal end tube opening capable of being connected to a distal end of the enteral feeding tube, and a generally rounded terminal end having a flattened tip. The bolus includes a fluid opening within the sidewall of the bolus between the proximal end opening and the terminal end of the bolus. An interior surface of the sidewall opposite the fluid opening is curved and slopes upwardly toward a distal end of the fluid opening. The curved interior surface and the fluid opening configuration allows for fluid flow that approximates the fluid flow rate characteristics of an open-ended tube. The fluid opening is biased toward the terminal end of the bolus thereby defining an elongated collar portion adjacent the proximal end tube opening of the bolus. The terminal end of the bolus has an aperture therethrough that forms a stylet passage in communication with the fluid opening. The stylet passage is sized to allow a stylet to pass therethrough when the tube is used in an over-the-wire intubation procedure.

Abstract: A stiffenable balloon catheter assembly capable of being converted from an “over-the-wire” mode with respect to a guidewire extending therethrough to a “rapid-exchange” mode with respect to a guidewire extending therethrough, and vice versa. The catheter has a plurality of lumens, one lumen however, having a side opening with an obstructable galp, the orientation of which, determines the utilization “mode” of the catheter assembly. Stiffening stylets may be adjustably locked into the lumens, depending upon the “mode”, to control the stiffness of the catheter assembly during its utilization within a patient.

Abstract: Methods for forming, shaping and heat treating stents for reinforcement of the lumen of peristaltic organs. The stent is formed by knitting preferably a nitinol wire into a pattern of overlapping loops selected such that from a relaxed state each row of loops may shift axially relative to and independently of the rows on either side. This local lengthening and shortening accommodates peristalsis of the organ without migrating within the organ.
