Disclosed herein is a method of recovery of the activity of a molecular sieve catalyst following use of the catalyst in an OTO conversion process. This is achieved by a regeneration apparatus and a method of regenerating a molecular sieve catalyst, comprising two stages. In a pretreatment stage, the catalyst is pretreated under pretreatment conditions by heating the catalyst to a temperature of between 320° C. to 700° C. in an oxygen depleted medium for a residence time of between 1 minute to two hours; and, in a regeneration stage, the catalyst is regenerated under regeneration conditions by heating the catalyst at a temperature of between 200° C. to 700° C. in an oxidizing medium for a residence time of between 1 to 60 minutes.

Provided is a process for making cyclohexylbenzene. The process includes the following steps: (a) contacting benzene and hydrogen in the presence of a first catalyst under hydroalkylation conditions sufficient to form a first effluent stream having cyclohexylbenzene, cyclohexane, methyl cyclopentane, and unreacted benzene; (b) supplying at least part of said first effluent stream to a first separation system to divide said first effluent stream part into a cyclohexane/methylcyclopentane-rich stream, a cyclohexane-rich stream, a benzene-rich stream, and a dicyclohexyl benzene-rich stream; (c) recycling at least part of the benzene-rich stream to the contacting step (a); (d) contacting the cyclohexane/methylcyclopentane-rich stream with a second catalyst that catalyzes dehydrogenation and exhibits low acidity under conditions sufficient to convert at least a portion of the cyclohexane to benzene and at least a portion of the methylcyclopentane to linear and/or branched paraffins to form a second effluent stream; and (e) recycling at least part of the second effluent stream to the contacting step (a).

The processes include a step of pretreating molecular sieve used in the conversion of oxygenate to olefin with a dimethyl ether composition. Fresh or regenerated molecular sieve, which is low in carbon content, is contacted or pretreated with the dimethyl ether composition to form a hydrocarbon co-catalyst within the pore structure of the molecular sieve, and the pretreated molecular sieve containing the co-catalyst is used to convert oxygenate to a lighter olefin product.
