    摘要: Disclosed is a magnetic recording medium and a method for manufacturing the same to provide a magnetic recording medium reducing medium noise and having excellent thermal stability. The magnetic recording medium includes a substantially amorphous seed layer and a polycrystal underlayer made of crystal grains having a substantially columnar structure, the polycrystal underlayer contacting thereto. In a boundary between the seed layer and the underlayer, fine grooves having a period up to as large as the magnetic layer crystal grain diameter are formed in the disc circumferential direction. Accordingly, the magnetic recording medium is allowed to have a grain shape with a value obtained by dividing the average grain diameter for the disc circumferential direction by the average grain diameter for the disc radial direction of no less than 0.5 and no more than 0.9, thus achieving simultaneously reduction of the medium noise and thermal stability.

    摘要: A magnetic recording medium includes a non-magnetic substrate, and a magnetic layer provided on the non-magnetic substrate. The value of the product Br.sub.1 .delta. of the residual flux density Br.sub.1 of the magnetic layer determined in a recording direction and the thickness .delta. of the magnetic layer is not less than 5 G.mu.m and not more than 180 G.mu.m; the value of the ratio of Br.sub.1 to the residual flux density Br.sub.2 determined in a direction parallel to the substrate plane and perpendicular to the recording direction, Br.sub.1 /Br.sub.2, is not less than 1.3 and not more than 3; the surface of the non-magnetic substrate has texture grooves therein extending predominantly in the recording direction; and the average roughness factor Ra of the surface of the magnetic layer determined in a direction perpendicular to the substrate plane and perpendicular to the recording direction is not less than 0.3 nm and not more than 1.9 nm. Alternatively, the value of the product Br.delta. of the residual flux density Br of the magnetic layer determined in the recording direction and the thickness .delta. of the magnetic layer is not less than 5 G.mu.m and not more than 80 G.mu.m; and the value of the anisotropic magnetic field H.sub.k of the magnetic recording medium is not less than 7 kOe and not more than 20 kOe.

    摘要: In one embodiment, a perpendicular magnetic recording medium includes a crystalline seed layer having a pseudo-hcp structure with stacking faults formed above a soft magnetic underlayer, a first interlayer comprising Ru and one of W, Ta, Mo, and Nb formed above the crystalline seed layer, a second interlayer formed above the first interlayer, and a magnetic recording layer formed above the second interlayer. The first interlayer has a W concentration between about 32 at % and 50 at %, Mo in a concentration between about 36 at % and 52 at %, Ta in a concentration between about 20 at % and 30 at %, or Nb in a concentration between about 7 at % and 30 at %. In another embodiment, a system includes a recording medium as described above, a magnetic head for reading from and/or writing to the medium, a head slider for supporting the head, and a control unit coupled to the head.
