    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a filtering apparatus for treating ballast water. The apparatus is constructed so that a housing cover plate and an exhaust unit are removably coupled to each other at an upper position of a housing. The exhaust unit includes a base flange on a portion thereof coupled to the housing cover plate and the base flange includes a projecting step that projects to be inserted into a core through hole formed in the housing cover plate. A core serving as a discharge passage of foreign substances includes a shaft coupling unit on a portion thereof coupled to the driving shaft, and is coupled at the shaft coupling unit to the driving shaft via a coupling means. The outer diameters of the coupling means and the shaft coupling unit are formed to be smaller than the outer diameter of the core.

    Abstract: A filter cloth of long pile fiber bundles is used as a tertiary filter in a wastewater processing method. The filter may be backwashed by a rotating suction head which does not touch the filter cloth. A combination of countercurrent and horizontal flow dislodges entrained solids from the filter cloth. Mounting of the filter media as modular components permits increased capacity within a single tank while avoiding down time in changeover of filter media.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a filter apparatus for filtering out suspended solids from liquid that is passed through filter material supported within a tank. The invention is also directed to a method of cleaning the filter material while the filter material remains inside the tank. The disclosed apparatus and method facilitates the removal of solids which are deposited on the filter material during the filtering operation, as well as biogrowth and other foreign matter. The cleaning method utilizes a suction generating device, such as a pump and associated suction heads, for backwashing the filter material. The cleaning method also utilizes a device for directing a liquid stream of a chemical cleaning solution at high velocity to the filter material thereby chemically washing the filter material and dislodging filtered solids and other foreign matter therefrom. The suction heads and the nozzle heads are positioned relative to the filter material such that substantially all of the runoff which results from operation of the liquid directing device is removed from the filter material by the suction heads.
