Abstract:
A system for detecting the presence of an object, it shape, length, size, etc., and if a heating material such as a hot melt adhesive applied to the object is applied to given places, or in the proper amount is accomplished by an infrared detection system which is not influenced by external disturbances. A radiant energy detection sensor is placed opposite a radiant energy source, and an object is moved between the radiant energy source and radiant energy detection sensor.
Abstract:
The described process involves the production of a product comprising a fibrous substrate to which an adhesive with long-term effect and a removable protective strip are applied in order to permit use of the adhesive to be deferred. The process is particularly useful with substrates whose surface to which the adhesive is applied contains irregularities. The adhesive is heated to a temperature at which it becomes paste-like and readily flowable and is brought to an opening situated above a plane surface on which the substrate has been placed. The adhesive is then caused to flow simultaneously with a relative movement between the substrate and the opening to be deposited on the substrate as a strand that is preferably continuous. The temperature of the adhesive on the substrate is then lowered in order to increase its viscosity until it becomes paste-like just prior to the point of turning solid. Pressure is thereafter applied to the adhesive, preferably with the imposition of a protective strip, in order to cause spreading of the strand and to cover it along its full length. Finally, the resultant product may be cut to produce a substrate of desired shape having an adhesive band thereon and a detachable protection strip covering the adhesive band.
Abstract:
A multi page mailer type business form is constructed by applying a first adhesive pattern to the top sheet bottom face perimeter areas, a second adhesive pattern to the bottom sheet top face perimeter areas, and applying third and fourth adhesive patterns to the middle sheet top and bottom face perimeter areas respectively. Variable information is printed on the top, bottom and middle sheets including machine readable identification information (bar code) which is common to the sheets that are to be assembled into a final multi page mailer. The set is accumulated, and verified by scanning the identification of information, and then the perimeter adhesive patterns are sealed. The adhesive is preferably pressure sensitive adhesive, and the final mailer produced has a book-like construction. The adhesive patterns are such that the top and bottom sheets can be provided in a stack without the perimeter adhesive patterns aligning, and the middle sheets can be provided in a separate stock. A four-part (or more) form may be constructed by slitting two sheets with adhesive patterns into four.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a high-integrity closure, sift-proof carton [10], a method and an adhesive dispensing apparatus for producing same. Foamed hot melt adhesive is dispensed in parallel strips from dispensing guns onto the flaps [20], [22], [30], [32] of the carton [10], which are thereafter folded down to close the carton [10]. The strips can be spaced so that a continuous tight adhesive seal is formed, especially by providing a strip pattern interdigitating when the flaps contact each other. Since all strips are provided in parallel, while the carton is moved with respect to the dispensing apparatus, application of adhesive is fast and reliable.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for applying adhesive to the open ends of containers having oppositely disposed front and rear wall panels, oppositely disposed side panels, and a center line parallel to the front and rear wall panels and aligned with the center of the side wall panels. The apparatus includes a conveyor for moving the containers along a line of movement through an adhesive application area. The containers are substantially immovably supported during adhesive application procedures. A pair of rotary adhesive applicators apply adhesive to the edges and portions adjacent such edges of an open end of the containers. These rotary adhesive applicators each have a central axis which is oriented in a non-normal relationship to at least one of the center line and line of movement of such containers, and are arranged relative to the conveyor such that as the containers pass the applicators, such applicators contact the edges of an open end of the container panels. A relative speed differential is maintained between the containers being moved along the conveyor and the rotating adhesive applicators. This differential causes a predetermined amount of adhesive to be deposited on the open edges and portions adjacent the edges of the wall panels when the rotating adhesive applicators contact such open edges of the container panels.
Abstract:
Three paperboard webs are glued to one another with as little expenditure of energy as possible. After leaving the gluing apparatus, the finished sheets cut to size are ready for shipment. The middle paperboard web is passed through between two steel rolls which apply glue homogeneously to both sides of the web. High linear pressure is produced in the region of the generatrices of the steel rolls respectively touching the web. Such pressure is necessary in order that a highly viscous polymeric synthetic or natural adhesive, preferably with a solids content of more than 50%, can be used. No special drying facilities are needed, and the water-soluble glue allows recycling without problems.
Abstract:
A gluing head comprises a valve which intermittently allows the delivery of glue to an ejection port for application to sheet material which moves relative to the head. The head is provided, downstream of the ejection port in the direction of relative motion, with a stepped recess and a low pressure source is coupled to the recess whereby glue threads formed upon the discontinuance of the delivery of glue to the ejection port will be drawn upwardly away from the sheet material.
Abstract:
An apparatus for applying sealant to a selected area of a container. The apparatus includes means for conveying a container into and away from a sealant applying station. Sealant dispensing means is positioned adjacent the conveying means at the sealing station and is operable for dispensing sealant onto a selected area of the container. Means is provided adjacent the sealant dispensing means for selectively removing any excess sealant from a nozzle portion of the sealant dispensing means.
Abstract:
An apparatus for applying a sealant or the like to a selected area of a container. The apparatus includes a nozzle for dispensing the sealant onto the selected area of the container. The nozzle includes a first portion which is adapted for mounting the nozzle to a source of sealant. The nozzle also includes a second portion which has a free end with a discharge opening onto the exterior surface of the free end. A first flow passage communicates with a source of sealant and provides flow communication between the source and the discharge passage having the discharge opening. The discharge passage is elongate having a width greater than the height of the passage.
