Abstract: Methods and systems for the valorization of carbon monoxide emissions from electric arc furnaces into highly valuable low-carbon footprint chemicals using carbon monoxide electrolysis are disclosed herein are disclosed. A disclosed method includes operating an electric arc furnace, generating, via operation of the electric arc furnace, a volume of carbon monoxide, supplying the volume of carbon monoxide to a cathode area of a carbon monoxide electrolyzer to be used as a reduction substrate, and generating, using the carbon monoxide electrolyzer, the reduction substrate, and an oxidation substrate, a volume of generated chemicals. The volume of generated chemicals is at least one of: a volume of hydrocarbons, a volume of organic acids, a volume of alcohol, a volume of olefins and a volume of N-rich organic compounds.

Abstract: This invention relates to a method of selection of an electrocatalyst array for a desired product outcome. The method comprises exposing an electrocatalyst system to an active agent dissolved or suspended in a conductive solution; and applying a voltage to the electrocatalyst system. The voltage sufficient to cause a multi-electron oxidation or multi-electron reduction of the active species; the electrocatalyst system comprises a counter electrode; and an electrocatalyst array. The array comprising a support substrate; uniformly sized surface structures protruding from a surface of the support substrate; the uniformly sized surface structures have edges and/or apices comprising a catalyst. When the uniformly sized surface structures are of a micrometer scale a first product ratio is produced, when the uniformly sized surface structures are of a nanometer scale a second product ratio is produced, wherein the first and second product ratios are different; the second product ratio requires a higher order electron process compared to producing the first product ratio.

The unsaturated organic substrate is electrochemically reduced with a carbon dioxide reactant in an ionically conductive, water-immiscible reactant medium to form the dicarboxylic organic product. The dicarboxylic organic product is recovered in an aqueous product medium. Example dicarboxylic organic products include phthalic acid, naphthalenedicarboxylic acid, furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, pyrrole-2,5-dicarboxylic acid, adipic acid, suberic acid, sebacic acid, and 1,12-dodecanedioic acid.

Abstract: A bioelectrochemical reactor (1) has an anode chamber (11) having at least two bioanodes (12, 13), and an anodic electrolyte (14) with an anodic electroactive microorganisms,—a cathode chamber (21) with at least one biocathode (22), and a cathodic electrolyte (24) with a cathodic electroactive microorganisms. The anode chamber (11) is separated from the cathode chamber (21) by, running from the anode chamber to the cathode chamber, a cation exchange membrane (31) and an anion exchange membrane (32). The cation and anion exchange membranes are separated from each other by an inter-membrane chamber (30), and means for applying a potential difference between the interconnected bioanodes and the biocathode/biocathodes. The bioanodes and biocathode/biocathodes have active surfaces such that the total active surface of the biocathode/biocathodes (22) is greater than the total active surface of the two bioanodes (12, 13). The arrangement includes a method for regenerating the activity of the bioanodes of the reactor and to the use of said reactor for the electrosynthesis of organic acids and/or alcohols from organic waste.
