Abstract:
A method and system of setting up a call over a circuit or packet switched network. Network elements exchange an automode sequence of signals to determine a modulation that both devices support and that will be used for the connection between them. The two elements may exchange the automode signals end-to-end, and then switch to a modulation scheme by negotiating an appropriate modulation or one supported by both endpoints. Alternately, each element can execute a split automode sequence with a separate network endpoint to determine the modulation to be used between the network elements. The network elements and network endpoints may negotiate a modulation scheme by exchanging integers that are indicative of the capabilities of the network elements to determine which supported modulation scheme is most desirable in the particular configuration of the elements.
Abstract:
A method for accessing and browsing the internet through the use of a telephone and the associated DTMF signals is disclosed. The preferred embodiment provides a system that converts the information content of a web page from text to speech (voice signals), signals the hyperlink selections of a web page in an audio manner, and allows selection of the hyperlinks through the use of DTMF signals generated from a telephone keypad. Upon receiving a DTMF signal corresponding to a hyperlink, the corresponding web page is fetched and again delivered to the user via one of the available delivery methods such as voice, fax-on-demand, electronic mail, or regular mail.
Abstract:
A signal processing system which discriminates between voice signals and data signals modulated by a voiceband carrier. The signal processing system includes a voice exchange, a data exchange and a call discriminator. The voice exchange is capable of exchanging voice signals between a switched circuit network and a packet based network. The signal processing system also includes a data exchange capable of exchanging data signals modulated by a voiceband carrier on the switched circuit network with unmodulated data signal packets on the packet based network. The data exchange is performed by demodulating data signals from the switched circuit network for transmission on the packet based network, and modulating data signal packets from the packet based network for transmission on the switched circuit network. The call discriminator is used to selectively enable the voice exchange and data exchange.
Abstract:
A voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) positioning center (VPC) is implemented in configuration with support from a text-to-voice module, emergency routing database, and VoIP switching points (VSPs) to allow a public safety access point (PSAP) or other emergency center to effectively communicate the nature of an emergency alert notification and the area of notification to the VoIP positioning center (VPC). The inventive VPC in turn determines which phones (including wireless and/or VoIP phones) are currently in the area for notification, and reliably and quickly issues the required warning to all affected wireless and VoIP phones.
Abstract:
A method and system for detecting a dual tone in a composite signal having first and second components including means for separating the composite signal into its first and second components, means for estimating power of the separated first and second components, means for determining frequency of the separated first and second components, and means for comparing the power and frequency of the first and second components to at least one of a plurality of respective power and frequency thresholds to determine whether the composite signal comprises a dual tone.
Abstract:
A facsimile communication system is provided which is capable of sending out picture data from a gateway device on a receiver side to a facsimile device on the receiver side even in the development of delays in communications caused by fluctuations in a communication network and of avoiding a forced breakdown of the facsimile communication occurring based on a judgement by the facsimile communication system that a communication failure has occurred due to the delays in communications. In the facsimile communication system, the gateway device on the receiver side, after receiving a digital instruction (DCS) signal from the gateway device on a sender side, without waiting for the receipt of a receiving preparation confirmation (CFR) signal to be fed from a facsimile device on the receiver side, returns, for itself, the CFR signal to the gateway device on the sender side and then starts to receive picture data from the gateway device on the receiver side. The gateway device on the receiver side starts to send the picture data to the facsimile device on the receiver side when accumulated amounts of received picture data exceeds amounts of data required to prevent communication failures.

Abstract:
A fax-aware telephone for handling facsimile transmissions over a computer network, such as the Internet, that includes a facsimile processing unit for handling an incoming or outgoing facsimile call, a voice processing unit for handling an incoming or outgoing voice call, a memory unit for storing an incoming facsimile transmission, and a file transfer protocol client for transferring a facsimile transmission to the computer network, an external storage device, or to a printer driver. The fax-aware telephone handles a facsimile call and a voice call together over a single data line from a computer network.
