Methods for determining the iron content of an in-use lubricant, which may be used on-site are disclosed. Test kits for conducting the methods are also disclosed. In one embodiment, a method according to the invention comprises: adding a predetermined amount of said in-use lubricant to an active solvent comprising predetermined amounts of an apolar organic solvent, a polar organic solvent, an organic acid, water, an iron complexing agent and a reducing agent, said active solvent having a pH between 2 and 4; thoroughly mixing the lubricant and the active solvent until the lubricant is completely dissolved; allowing the mixture to react completely and separate into a top layer and a bottom layer, the bottom layer comprising an iron complex; filtering at least a portion of the bottom layer of the mixture directly into a receptacle suitable for absorbance measurement in the visible range; photometrically measuring the net absorbance of the filtered solution at frequencies in the visible range; and converting the absorbance measurement to ppm iron content of the lubricant.
Abstract:
The refractory protected, replaceable insert for a gasifier includes a replaceable floor edge insert that is formed with a predetermined mating profile that is complementary to a finished mating profile of the gasifier floor. The geometry of the mating profiles of the replaceable floor edge insert and the gasifier floor permit removable engagement between the floor edge insert and the mating profile of the gasifier floor. The replaceable floor edge insert is protected by a ring-like arrangement of hanging refractory bricks that each include an appendage. Each brick appendage covers a portion of the inner radial edge of the replaceable floor edge insert and also covers an upper surface portion of an underlying quench ring, thus prolonging the life of the floor and the quench ring. A refractory ceramic fiber paper can be provided between the hanging brick and the floor edge and quench ring. Also, a refractory ceramic fiber rope can be provided at the inner peripheral edge of the replaceable floor edge insert upon the upper surface of the quench ring, and overlaid by the appendage.
Abstract:
Apparatus and method for converting hydrocarbon fuels to hydrogen-rich reformate that incorporate a carbon dioxide fixing mechanism into the initial hydrocarbon conversion process. The mechanism utilizes a carbon dioxide fixing material within the reforming catalyst bed to remove carbon dioxide from the reformate product. The bed optionally contains a water gas shift catalyst. The removal of carbon dioxide from the product stream shifts the reforming reaction and shift reaction equilibria toward production of higher concentrations of hydrogen with only small amounts of carbon oxides produced. The carbon oxide-depleted reformate is directed to a purification bed comprising a hydrogen fixing material that removes hydrogen from the reformate stream to provide fixed hydrogen and a hydrogen-depleted reformate that flows out of the purification bed. The purification bed is heated to release fixed hydrogen from the hydrogen fixing material to provide a highly pure hydrogen gas.

Methods for grinding hot coke including feeding the hot coke into a system while maintaining the system under less than atmospheric pressure, wetting the coke during the feeding step to assure constant flow of the coke into a grinding mill where the coke is reduced to a slurry and forwarded to a holding tank. Recovering and treating vapors derived from the grinding of the coke and finally feeding the slurry to a gasifier means.
Abstract:
This invention concerns the improved preparation of alkanol and glycol esters, such as ethylene glycol diesters, by reaction of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst system comprising ruthenium and a quaternary aryl or alkaryl phosphonium salt and a liquid phase medium containing a carboxylic acid co-reactant.
Abstract:
Hot gases containing ash and char which pass through an undesirable viscous, sticky phase on cooling through an intermediate temperature range, are cooled in a first cooling zone including a falling film of cooling liquid and a spray of cooling liquid followed by contact with a body of cooling liquid and subsequent mixing therewith.
Abstract:
A gas cooler and process are provided for extracting heat from the hot raw gas stream from the partial oxidation of a hydrocarbonaceous or carbonaceous fuel, and the simultaneous production of a separate stream of saturated or superheated steam, or separate streams of both. The gas cooler comprises a vertical pressure vessel with an upper central outlet through which saturated steam may be removed and a closed bottom. A refractory lined hot gas inlet chamber is attached to the bottom of the pressure vessel. A coaxial vertical water-tight cylindrically shaped central chamber is supported within the vessel and defines an annular elongated passage with the inside walls of the vessel. A plurality of bundles of helical tubes through which the hot gas flows are spaced in the annular passage and are serially connected to a helical bundle of gas tubes that is supported in the central chamber. Concurrent indirect heat exchange between boiler feed water and the hot gas takes place in the annular passage or evaporative section to produce saturated steam. Countercurrent indirect heat exchange between saturated steam and partially cooled gas takes place in the central chamber to produce superheated steam. Advantageously, the gas cooler may be easily turned up or down with load by closing off one or more of the helical tubes. Further, along with the efficient cooling of a hot gas stream containing entrained matter, saturated or superheated steam, or both may be simultaneousy produced in the same vessel.
Abstract:
A tension leg platform system for use in drilling wellbores into the floor of an offshore body of water. Included in the system is a buoyancy control vessel having a plurality of pull down cables attached thereto which extend to the ocean floor. A plurality of spaced apart anchors disposed at the ocean floor are positioned to receive the lower ends of the respective pull down cables. A submergible hull slidably engages the respective hold down cables such that the hull can be controllably lowered to the ocean floor whereby a canopy carried on the hull will cover an uncontrollably flowing well to conduct the effluent to the water's surface.
