Abstract: An ophthalmic surgical instrument for peeling a retinal membrane includes a handle and an actuator mounted on the handle. A first arm and a second arm extend outwardly from a distal end of an outer tube mounted to the handle. The first arm includes a first pulling surface and a first gripping surface and the second arm includes a second pulling surface and a second gripping surface. The pulling surface of each arm is substantially perpendicular to the gripping surface of each arm and the gripping surfaces of the arms face one another. The first pulling surface and the second pulling surface move toward one another when the outer tube is extended over the first arm and the second arm in order to raise a flap of the retinal membrane that is then gripped between the first gripping surface and the second gripping surface.

Abstract: A surgical microscope is configured to capture images of an eye of a patient and defines an optical axis. An illumination source is configured to emit a plurality of beams onto the eye of the patient at a plurality of angles relative to the optical axis. A controller is coupled to the surgical microscope and the illumination source, the controller configured to independently control values for illumination parameters for each beam of the plurality of beams to facilitate imaging of the eye of the patient. The illumination parameters may compensate for reflections from the iris, offset of the eye relative to the optical axis, and reflections of ambient light. The illumination parameters may be controlled subject to inputs received from a surgeon or other user.

Abstract: Systems and methods are disclosed for reducing pulsations in peristaltic pumps. In some examples, a cassette comprises a cassette body and a flexible sheet joined to the cassette body, wherein a transition region of the flexible sheet comprises at least one ridge that has a maximum height at a position that is offset from a center line of a cassette body transition channel. In some examples, a cassette body transition channel comprises side walls that taper toward an active region of the fluid path and/or toward a bottom of the transition channel. An example method of operating a peristaltic pump comprises operating rollers at a higher speed during portions of a revolution that otherwise would result in a lower than average flow rate and at a lower speed during portions of the revolution that otherwise would result in a higher than average flow rate.
