Abstract:
Nutritious granular materials of fine particle sizes agglomerated within versatile micropellets are useful for inserting significant amounts of nutritious properties into snack foods. Expandable micropellet-containing formulations provide for introduction of fine particle ingredients such as proteins, minerals and other components or desirable nutrients into food processing lines not typically amenable to the fine particle sizes. Micropellet-containing formulations may consist entirely of micropellets, or may contain an expandable starch such as, for example, corn meal, sheeted doughs, and expanded collet products onto which the micropellets may be basted.
Abstract:
Apparatuses for cutting food product are provided having a cutting head. The cutting head includes one or more knife assemblies. Each knife assembly includes a knife extending toward the food product and is adapter to secure the knife to the cutting head. The knife has a corrugated shape to produce a food product slice with generally parallel cuts wherein the food product slice has a periodic shape and a large-amplitude cross-section.
Abstract:
Composition and method for making a flexible polymer film highly loaded with at least one plant-based organic particulate filler, and optionally an inorganic filler.
Abstract:
A method of producing expanded nuts, the method comprising the steps of: (a) immersing a plurality of nut kernels in an aqueous liquid thereby hydrating at least a portion of each kernel; and (b) gun puffing the hydrated kernels causing at least one of expansion and blistering of at least an outer surface of the nut kernels. There is also disclosed a method of method of producing expanded nuts, the method comprising the steps of: (a) immersing a plurality of nut kernels in an aqueous liquid at a pressure of at least 100 MPa thereby hydrating at least a portion of each kernel; and (b) dehydrating the hydrated kernels causing at least one of expansion and blistering of at least an outer surface of the nut kernels.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for storing and dispensing a viscous product. The product and a propellant are stored in a container on a base, and the propellant forms a head space. In a storage configuration, the container rests on the base, the base rests on a surface, and the propellant in the head space and the product tend to move toward positions wherein the propellant in the head space is at a higher elevation than the product and the product is at a higher elevation than an inlet to a dispenser. In one aspect, the base comprises a first portion, a second portion comprising a lid, a sidewall comprising a window, and an interior. In a second aspect, the method comprises storing the container in the storage configuration, removing the lid to expose a dispenser, dispensing the product, and viewing an interior of the base through the window.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for controlling a flow of a product over a product attrition bed, where the product comprises a plurality of product units, for example, potatoes. In one aspect, apparatus comprises a product attrition bed and an auger positioned above the product attrition bed. The auger comprises a flow restriction mechanism to restrict a discharge flow of the product from the auger. In a second aspect, the method comprises feeding the product to the auger to provide a product charge; substantially confining the product charge in a charge space; rotating the auger to move the charge space, and thereby the product charge, in the flow direction; and discharging the product charge from the auger through a flow restriction mechanism. In a third aspect, the method and apparatus controls the feed of product to the auger, for example, providing one control volume of product per revolution of the auger.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for settling a product in a partially formed package. In one aspect, the invention comprises the steps: providing a partially formed package; filling the partially formed package with a product; and settling the product in the partially formed package. The settling step comprises rotating a paddle wheel comprising at least one paddle against the partially formed package. In a second aspect, the invention comprises an improved product settler for settling product in a partially formed package. The improved product settler comprises a paddle wheel. The paddle wheel comprises at least one paddle that is positioned to cause an impact against the partially formed package. The impact agitates the partially formed package and thereby settles the product.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for measuring a dimension of a non-rigid object and using the dimension to pick and place the object. A first input device conveys a non-rigid object into contact with a feed forward unit, which contact causes a displacement of the feed forward unit. The displacement measures a dimension of the object. The measured dimension is transmitted via at least one line of communication.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for depositing an ultra-thin inorganic coating on to a packaging film substrate is disclosed. Flame pretreatment enhances the quality of the inorganic coating. Multiple coating layers may be deposited onto the substrate by passing the substrate over various one or more flame head configurations in either a stand-alone or in-line manufacturing environment.
