Abstract:
A trail map directory for off-highway vehicles is disclosed. The directory includes a binder having a plurality of individual map pages laminated for dry ease writing and for ease of cleaning. A mechanism is provided for releasably attaching each map page to the binder. A key map is positioned towards the front of the binder, and the key map is subdivided into individual regional map display portions corresponding to the individual map pages. Each map page is preferably a substantially flat, relatively stiff laminated panel. The panel has first and second faces located on opposite surfaces thereof, and first and second side edges which define the width dimension of the panel. Each panel first face includes an enlarged map display portion indexed relative to the key map and is in the form of an enhanced topographical map overlaid with off-road trails present within the map boundary. The trails are color-coded to indicate relative difficulty of use. The first face further includes trail symbols relative to the indicated off-road trails. Each second face includes an index to trail symbols appearing on the first face. The second face may also include GPS coordinates pertinent to the geographical points on the topographical map as well as driving directions to the off-road trails. Finally, an apparatus is disposed along each panel first side edge for releasably attaching the panel to the binder for removal for individual use.
Abstract:
A surgical access device, such as a trocar, includes a pendent valve having an elongate structure extending from a proximal end to a septum valve disposed at a distal end. In operation, the elongate structure follows the angle of the instrument to pre-position the septum valve into the path of the instrument where it is not significantly challenged during instrument insertion or manipulation. The pendant valve can be made to float at both the proximal end and the distal end of the elongate structure, to further reduce the vulnerability of the septum valve. Since the valve is less vulnerable to instrument insertion, it can be formed to minimize friction and maximize the functional range of the access device.
Abstract:
A tissue welding apparatus is adapted to fuse a first piece of tissue to a second piece of tissue which are disposed in a surface proximate relationship. An elongate shaft carries a first jaw, and a second opposing jaw moveable relative to the first jaw. At least one penetrating member is carried by the first jaw and moveable relative to the second jaw to create a channel through the first piece of material and the second piece of material. A source of heat is coupled to the penetrating member for denaturing the tissue defining the channel. This denatured tissue forms a column binding the first piece of tissue to the second piece of tissue. A chemical agent can be carried to the tissue with the penetrating member.
Abstract:
A laparoscopic insufflation device is provided in the configuration of a coil with a blunt tip. The device is capable of passing through the abdominal wall without cutting tissue, and exiting the abdominal wall substantially parallel to the inner surface. While rotation of the coiled device results in forward movement through the abdominal wall, a counter force can be applied to the device to create a safety space between the wall and the interior organs. With the blunt distal tip, parallel exit angle, and safety space, there is substantially no threat to the interior organs during placement of the device. Further space can be generated with the use of pressured gas to produce an abdominal cavity for the subsequent placement of trocars. By rotatably attaching the coiled insufflation device to a trocar, the advantage of a counter force can be used not only to establish the safety space but also to pull the trocar into the abdominal wall with a counterforce which resists tenting.
Abstract:
Polypeptide growth factors, methods of making them, polynucleotides encoding them, antibodies to them, and methods of using them are disclosed. The polypeptides comprise an amino acid segment that is at least 90% identical to residues 46-163 of SEQ ID NO:2 or residues 235-345 of SEQ ID NO:2. Multimers of the polypeptides are also disclosed. The polypeptides, multimeric proteins, and polynucleotides can be used in the study and regulation of cell and tissue development, as components of cell culture media, and as diagnostic agents.

Abstract:
A catheter facilitating traversal of restrictions in body conduits includes a shaft having a distal tip with a shape that is non-conical, radially twisted, and rectangular in radial cross section. An outer surface of the tip includes at least one side section extending from a blunt point radially outwardly with progressive positions proximally along an axis of the tip. The side section includes a proximal portion in proximity to the shaft, and a distal portion twisted radially with respect to the proximal portion. The catheter can be adapted for placement over a guidewire and can be made transparent thereby facilitating visualization through an endoscope in the catheter.
Abstract:
A multi-seal trocar system (10) includes a plurality of co-axial sealing elements (30 60,80) adapted for forming a seal with either a large or small instrument. Small and large scaling elements (45,62) are disposed in an in-line arrangement such that a single port is provided for instrument insertion. A zero seal (80) is disposed distally of the sealing elements to seal a working channel of the system and to prevent backflow when no instruments are inserted The small sealing element (45) is configured such that insertion of a large instrument automatically moves the small sealing element (45) out of its path, thereby avoiding contact with the large instrument
Abstract:
The present invention relates to an absorbent article, such as a disposable diaper, comprising of a topsheet, barrier cuffs, an optional acquisition layer, an absorbent core, a barrier layer, and a backsheet. The diaper is arranged so as to create breathable zones of reduced stiffness surrounding the wearer's thighs. That is, the layers of material forming the diaper are arranged so the area surrounding the wearer's thighs includes only the backsheet, barrier cuffs and leg elastics. No liquid-impervious material is present within the breathable zones of reduced stiffness. Furthermore, these breathable zones of reduced stiffness preferably are formed so that only hydrophobic material is present. Thus, the present invention provides a better fitting, less irritating absorbent article by reducing the stiffness and increasing the breathability of the diaper in the area surrounding the wearer's thighs, resulting in increase comfort and fit around the wearer's thighs.
Abstract:
A protective device for use with a hypodermic syringe for preventing accidental needle sticks after fluid has been ejected from the syringe and rendering the syringe non-reuseable. The protective device comprises a hollow, cylindrical casing defining a forward end wall having an opening therein, a rearward open end and an angular gripping flange adjacent the rearward end. The casing is adapted to be disposed about the syringe such that the syringe is reciprocally translatable therein with the syringe needle projecting through the opening in the forward end wall of the casing and the angular gripping flange axially spaced from the syringe flange. A dual component foaming agent is disposed in the casing adjacent the forward end wall thereof which, when the components thereof are mixed together activate to form an expanding and hardening plastic foam. Collapsible tabs are carried by the casing for spacing the syringe from the foaming agent prior to and during ejection of fluid from the syringe to prevent inadvertent activation of the foaming agents. Upon pressing the syringe into the casing subsequent to the ejection of fluid from the syringe, the foaming agents are activated and the expanding foam forces the syringe and syringe needle rearwardly within the casing and passes about the needle and through the forward end of the casing and hardens, thereby encapsulating the used needle within the casing and foam.
Abstract:
A system and method for turning on and off a bilge pump whereby bilge water level is detected using level sensors and bilge pumps are turned on and off based on the detected water level. The system further incorporates an automatic transmission outside the watercraft to alert of the water level in the bilge. The system is controllable from within the watercraft and remotely controllable through wireless transmission.
