The present invention relates to a composition containing a particulate solid, a non-polar organic medium, and a compound obtained/obtainable by reacting an aromatic amine with hydrocarbyl-substituted acylating agent, wherein the hydrocarbyl-substituted acylating agent is selected from the group consisting of an oligomer or polymer from condensation polymerization of a hydroxy-substituted C10-30 carboxylic acid into a polyester, an optionally hydroxy-substituted C10-30 carboxylic acid, a C10-30-hydrocarbyl substituted acylating agent, and a polyolefin-substituted maleic anhydride. The invention further provides compositions for inks, thermoplastics, plasticizers, plastisols, crude grinding and flush.

The present invention provides a composition and a concentrate, comprising: (a) a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity, (b) a quaternary ammonium salt of a hydrocarbyl-substituted acylating agent condensation product, and (c) an optional amount of a succinimide dispersant different from (b), and a use of the composition or concentrate for lubricating an engine. In a further embodiment, the invention provides the use of a quaternary ammonium salt of a hydrocarbyl-substituted acylating agent condensation product as a dispersant in a lubricating composition, and as a synergistic dispersant combination with a different succinimide dispersant.

The dispersibility of soot in a lubricant formulation containing a dispersant is evaluated by (a) preparing a dispersion of carbon black in the lubricant formulation; (b) depositing a sample of the dispersed carbon black from step (a) onto a planar chromatography medium; (c) subjecting the sample of (b) to chromatographic conditions and (d) evaluating the extent of migration of the carbon black by comparing the density of darkening due to carbon black at pre-defined locations along the chromatography medium. The liquid mobile chromatography phase comprises a mixture of a liquid non-aromatic hydrocarbon portion having viscosity and boiling point less than that of an oil of lubricating viscosity; and an oil component comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity and the dispersant or dispersants that are also contained within the lubricant formulation.

The present invention relates to a lubricating composition containing an oil of lubricating viscosity and an antiwear package. The antiwear package may contain a derivative of a hydroxycarboxylic acid; and a salt of a sulphur-free phosphorus-containing compound. The salt includes amine salts, ammonium salts, metal salts and mixtures thereof. The invention further provides for a method of supplying an internal combustion engine with the lubricating composition.

The invention particularly relates to compositions that deliver an ash-free base to a lubricant in the form of a basic amine additive, without adversely impacting seal compatibility and/or degradation, and methods thereof.
