A laser diode includes: a laser chip including at least one laser stripe which extends in a resonator length direction between a first end surface and a second end surface opposed to each other, in which the laser stripe includes a gain region and a saturable absorption region in the resonator length direction, and the width of the laser stripe in the saturable absorption region is larger than the width of the laser stripe in the gain region.

    摘要: An optical repeater includes an optical splitter for splitting an optical input data pulse stream of wavelength &lgr;0 into first and second components. The first component is supplied to a first. mode-locked laser diode to produce a first clock pulse stream of wavelength &lgr;1 which is synchronized to the input data pulse stream. The first clock pulse stream is fed to a second mode-locked laser diode to produce a second clock pulse stream of wavelength &lgr;0 which is synchronized to the first clock pulse stream. The second clock pulse stream is entered to an optical gate. The second component of the input data from the splitter is amplified sufficiently to control the optical gate to modulate the second clock pulse stream so that the data pulse pattern is impressed on the second clock pulse stream.

    摘要: A semiconductor laser is provided which is capable of generating a train of ultrashort light pulses with an ultrahigh repetition frequency and which is useful in optical communications and optical information processing. The semiconductor laser is a mode-locked semiconductor laser which has two resonator cavities which are formed by two facets and a distributed feedback structure between these two facets. The length of the resonator cavity formed between one facet and the distributed feedback structure is 1/m (where m is an integer) of the length of the resonator cavity formed by the other facet and the distributed feedback structure. A saturable absorption region and a high-frequency modulation region are provided within the longer of the resonator cavities. By making the high-frequency modulation frequency be equal to the round trip frequency of the light within the longer resonator cavity, mode-locked operation is achieved. Because of the linking of the shorter resonator cavity, a train of light pulses having a repetition frequency of m times the mode-locked pulse train frequency is obtained.

    摘要: According to a method and apparatus for inducing a photochemical reaction, a substrate is placed in a closed cell with a window for transmitting an ultraviolet beam therethrough and is located to oppose the window, a gas is filled to cause the phtoochemical reaction upon irradiation of the ultraviolet beam into the cell, ultraviolet pulses are repetitively controlled to emit at a predetermined intensity, an ultraviolet beam size and shape are adjusted in accordance with a size and a shape of an irradiation portion of the substrate, the repetition frequency of the ultraviolet beam is adjusted and set to effectively cause the photochemical reaction on the substrate in accordance with the adjusted ultraviolet beam size and shape, and the ultraviolet beam having the set beam size and shape at the repetition frequency is irradiated through the window of the cell.
