    摘要: A color image forming apparatus including a plurality of photosensitive drums on which toner images of different colors are respectively formed. An endless belt confronts the plurality of photosensitive drums. A drive source drives rotation of the endless belt, or alternatively plural drive sources drive the photosensitive drums to individually rotate. A memory stores pre-measured characteristics of a color misregistration of a color image in a sub-scanning direction of the apparatus, the color image formed by transferring images from respective of the plurality of photosensitive drums. Further, a control unit changes an average running speed of the endless belt, or alternatively an average running speed of at least some of the photosensitive drums, by controlling the drive sources, to compensate for color misregistration, based on the stored characteristics of color misregistration. The belt can either transport a paper sheet or have a color image formed thereon as an intermediate transfer device.

A predetermined print pattern is printed with a plurality of heads, and the predetermined pattern that is printed is scanned with a sensor (110) to detect a density unevenness for the print pattern in each color on a nozzle basis. The sensor (110) comprises a light emitting element which emits a light including all light regions, R, G, and B, and a plurality of light receiving elements each of which receives R, G, and B lights, respectively. The plurality of light receiving elements are arranged in a main scanning direction. The print pattern printed by each head is read by the light receiving element for the complementary color light of the pattern and the light receiving element for a non-complementary color light of the pattern, and a change in density level in the nozzle column direction is detected based on the difference between the two outputs.

Before printing, a CPU (104) detects the paper edge positions of the paper sheet on the basis of the output from a paper sensor (303), and reads the corresponding correction values from the memory (112) according to the type of paper sheet, the environmental temperature and the lift height. A window control unit (106) corrects the paper edge position with the correction values, thereby generating a window signal which controls the side margins of the paper sheet. In accordance with the window signal, a head control unit (105) controls the heads (103) for the respective colors to precisely determine printable regions extending horizontally from the printing start positions to the printing end positions.
