A temporary dental cement composition temporarily affixes a dental prosthesis or appliance to a tooth or other dental substrate. The dental cement includes a mixture of: (i) an ion leaching agent; (ii) polycarboxylic acid; (iii) sugar; and (iv) water. The sugar is added in a sufficient amount that the ion leaching agent and polycarboxylic acid form a hardenable adhesive having an adhesive matrix which forms a relatively weak, temporary bond, as opposed to a permanent bond. The temporary cement composition is compatible with subsequent deposition of typical bonding materials, such as resin luting agents as well as non-resin permanent cements.

Methods for removing endotoxin from naturally occurring materials, such as polysaccharides (e.g., agarose and/or carrageenan) are described herein. Polysaccharides that are substantially free of endotoxins and uses thereof are also described. The polysaccharide materials can be isolated from microorganisms, multicellular organisms, such as, algae, plants, seaweed, etc. The method involves the use of acidic and basic solutions to hydrolyze the lipid-polysaccharide bond in endotoxins. Cleaving the fatty acid from the polysaccharide reduces the water-solubility of the fatty acid and enables its removal with an organic solvent such as ethanol. The polysaccharide component can also undergo acidic or basic hydrolysis due to the weak glycosidic bond between the sugar rings.

According to the invention, this material consists of a hydrophilic paste comprising, expressed as percentage by weight relative to the total weight of the material: between 5 and 15% of an astringent; between 25 and 50% of a specifically chosen texturizing agent; between 30 and 60% of water; and between 0 and 20% of a humectant; the total amount of water and humectant being between 35 and 65% by weight relative to the total weight of the material; said insertion material having the following release profile for the astringent: less than 20% of astringent released after 5 min; less than 40% of astringent released after 10 min; less than 50% of astringent released after 15 min; less than 60% of astringent released after 30 min; less than 80% of astringent released after 60 min.
