Abstract: An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle includes a mirror head and a mounting base, with a camera module disposed at the mirror head. The camera module includes a camera having a field of view exterior of the vehicle when the mirror assembly is attached at the vehicle. The camera module is extendable and retractable relative to a mirror casing of the mirror head. With the camera module retracted and with the mirror assembly attached at the vehicle, the camera module is oriented such that its field of view encompasses a blind spot region at least at the body side of the vehicle. With the camera module extended and with the mirror assembly attached at the vehicle, the camera module may be oriented such that its field of view encompasses a region at least along a body side of a trailer being towed by the vehicle.

Abstract: An exterior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle equipped with a blind spot detection system includes a base configured to fixedly attach at a side of the vehicle and a mirror casing movably attached at the base. The mirror reflective element sub-assembly includes a backing plate having a backing plate perimeter. A mirror reflective element is fixed at the backing plate and movable therewith via operation of an actuator. The mirror reflective element includes a reflector-coated glass substrate having a substrate perimeter. A blind spot indicator is disposed at the backing plate outboard of the substrate perimeter of the glass substrate and between the substrate perimeter and the backing plate perimeter. The blind spot indicator is in communication with the blind spot detection system of the vehicle and indicates to the operator of the vehicle when an object is detected to be present in the blind spot of the vehicle.

Abstract: A method for unlocking a door for an authorized user of a vehicle via a door unlocking system of the vehicle includes providing a control at the vehicle, providing a near field communication device at the vehicle, and wirelessly communicating, via the near field communication device of the vehicle, with a near field communication-enabled smartphone when the smartphone is within a threshold distance from the vehicle. Responsive to the near field communication device of the vehicle communicating with the smartphone, it is determined whether or not the smartphone is an authorized device. The smartphone is authenticated as an authorized device for communication with the near field communication device of the equipped vehicle. Responsive to the smartphone being authenticated as an authorized device, the locking mechanism is actuated, at least in part via the control, to unlock the vehicle door for the user of the authorized device.

Abstract: An interior rearview mirror assembly for a vehicle includes a mirror casing and a prismatic interior reflective element. The reflective element comprises a wedge-shaped glass substrate having a perimeter edge about a periphery of the glass substrate and extending between first and second surfaces thereof. The glass substrate has a mirror reflector established at the second surface. A front surface of the perimeter edge provides a smooth curved transition at the perimeter edge between a perimeter region of the first surface and the mirror casing. The front surface of the perimeter edge is rounded by at least one of grinding and polishing to provide a generally rounded curved surface between the first surface of the glass substrate and the mirror casing. The radius of curvature of the front surface is at least about 2.5 mm. No portion of the mirror casing encompasses the first surface of the glass substrate.

The mirror back plate includes an aperture extending therethrough and includes walls established at a first side of said mirror back plate by the plastic injection molding operation, with the walls at least partially circumscribing the aperture and extending outward from the first side of the mirror back plate. A heater pad is disposed between the rear side of the glass substrate and the second side of the mirror back plate. The heater pad has a light transmitting portion that is generally aligned with the aperture of the mirror back plate and with a light-transmitting portion of the mirror reflector.
