Abstract: Methods and apparatuses for using microfluidics to generate bubbles and using the generated bubbles to construct scaffolds and cell-holding structures for culturing biological samples or analytes. In one implementation, a scaffold for growing cells is provided to include a matrix of interconnected cavities formed from mixing a gas and a liquid containing a cross linkable material to produce a matrix of gas bubbles of substantially the same size and cross linking the cross linkable material to form a structure in which cells are grown. In another implementation, a scaffold apparatus for growing cells includes a ball of a cross linked material forming an exterior shell that encloses to form a hollow interior inside the ball and biological samples embedded in the external shell.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and devices are disclosed for molecular capture, manipulation, and analysis. In one aspect, a device to aggregate and characterize particles in a fluid includes an electrically insulative substrate including a channel to carry an electrically conducting fluid containing particles, electrodes located in the channel forming a nanoscale opening and including an insulating layer over their surface at the opening, a first circuit to apply a non-uniform ac electric field and a dc bias signal across the electrodes, in which the applied non-uniform ac electric field produces a positive dielectrophoretic force to aggregate the particles in a trapping region including the opening and adjacent region, a second circuit to detect changes in a dc current caused by at least some of the particles in the trapping region, and an optical device that directs a coherent light beam on the opening to determine Raman spectra of the particles in the trapping region.

Abstract: The present invention relates to a method for producing male sterile plant, a mutated nucleotide molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence of the transcription factor bHLH142 and an inserted T-DNA segment, and a novel transformed plant cell and a male-sterile mutant plant comprising the mutated nucleotide molecule, in which the transcription factor bHLH142 is not expressed. The present invention also relates to a novel reversible male sterile transgenic plant, wherein the transcription factor bHLH142 is overexpressed, and its preparation method. The bHLH gene is tissue specifically expresses in the anther and it plays a pivotal role in pollen development. Both the male sterile and reversible male sterile transgenic plants showed a completely male sterile phenotype, but the fertility of the reversible male sterile transgenic plant can be restored under low temperature.

Abstract: In a general aspect, a method for inferring one or more biomolecule-to-biomolecule interaction sites includes receiving data representative of a plurality of prediction models. Each prediction model is associated with a different atom type of a plurality of atom types and characterizes biomolecule-to-biomolecule interaction site specific patterns common to a plurality of three dimensional probability density maps. Each three dimensional probability density map is associated with a corresponding biomolecule of a plurality of biomolecules included in a training data set and represents a probability of a non-covalent interacting atom on a surface of the corresponding biomolecule interacting with the atom type associated with the prediction model. Data representative of a query biomolecule is received, the data including one or more unknown biomolecule-to-biomolecule interaction sites. The one or more unknown biomolecule-to-biomolecule interaction sites of the query biomolecule are inferred based on the data representative of the plurality of prediction models.

Abstract: The invention provides DNAzymes which are capable to silence the expression of EGFR at allele-specific level. These allele-specific DNAzymes against EGFR T790M mutation will knockdown the expression of EGFR T790M mRNA while keeping EGFR wild-type mRNA intact. Hence, these allele-specific DNAzymes against EGFR T790M mutation may overcome T790M-derived TKI resistance accompanied with lower unwanted side effects on normal cells in lung cancer patients.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a method of treating influenza A virus (IAV) infection by a fusion protein. According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, the fusion protein comprises a HBD peptide and a IgG1 Fc region. According to other embodiments of the present disclosure, the fusion protein comprises a DcR3 protein and a IgG1 Fc region. The present fusion protein is found to possess inhibitory effects on IAV-induced secretion of the inflammatory cytokine, and IAV-induced infiltration of inflammatory cell into the lung tissue. Accordingly, the fusion protein is useful for developing a medicament for the treatment or prophylaxis of IAV infection and/or ameliorating pulmonary injury caused by excessive inflammation associated with IAV infection in a subject.
