An evaporative emissions (EVAP) control system for a vehicle includes a purge pump configured to pump fuel vapor to an engine of the vehicle via a vapor line and a purge valve. The system includes a hydrocarbon (HC) sensor disposed in the vapor line and configured to measure an amount of HC in the fuel vapor pumped by the purge pump to the engine via the vapor line. A controller is configured to: detect an imminent cold start of the engine and, in response to the detecting, perform the cold start of the engine by controlling at least one of the purge pump and the purge valve, based on the measured amount of HC, to deliver a desired amount of fuel vapor to the engine, which decreases HC emissions by the engine.

A vehicle fluid directing includes an engine control unit (ECU) mounted directly to the intake manifold to provide engine management and diagnostic functions. A case encloses the ECU to hermetically seal and protect the circuit board and attached components. Sensors preferably extend through the case and into the intake manifold to receives a direct input to the medium passing through the intake manifold. In another embodiment, a sensor such as an accelerometer which does not extend from the case receives vibration input. As the entire circuit board is directly mounted to the intake manifold, the vibrations are received as input to the sensor.

A control apparatus for deactivating one of an intake valve and an exhaust valve in an internal combustion engine has a stepped sleeve slidably receiving a valve stem in a smaller diameter portion and a rocker piston in a larger diameter portion. Hydraulic fluid is retained in the sleeve and a clamping block is positioned adjacent the exterior of the larger diameter portion. When the clamping block is activated to engage the sleeve, the sleeve remains stationary as reciprocating movement of the rocker piston causes the valve to open and close. When the clamping block is not activated, the sleeve is free to move with the piston leaving the engine valve closed.

A mounting arrangement and method for installing fuel injectors into a molded composite intake manifold having an integral fuel rail provides an aligned injector pocket bore in the fuel rail portion and an injector seat bore in an intake manifold runner. The seating bore is oversized to allow the injector to be angled to enable the tip to be advanced into the seat bore, allowing the injector one end to be thereafter swung into alignment with the pocket bore and inserted therein. A seal has an integral tubular portion configured to be fit over the injector tip and within the injector seat bore to be located therein. When the manifold is assembled onto the cylinder head, the seal is squeezed to grip the injector tip and sealed within the injector seat bore.

A fuel injection valve for an engine fuel injection system includes a valve housing, a valve seat fixedly secured to the valve housing and a valve needle movable axially and co-operably engageable with the valve seat. The fuel injection valve also includes a diaphragm that aligns the needle with the valve seat. The diaphragm has an outer zone attached to the housing and an inner zone attached to the needle, such that the inner zone of the diaphragm moves in unison with the needle to thereby avoid frictional sliding contact between the needle and the diaphragm. Alignment of the needle with the valve seat may be assured by assembly wherein the diaphragm is first fixed to the needle and the needle is then seated upon the valve seat prior to clamping of the outer zone of the diaphragm to the housing while the needle is seated.

A system for accomplishing solenoid control of engine valves places a soldnoid valve between an oil gallery and the lost-motion actuator for each valve. Although the basic phasing for the valves is established by a camshaft, the actual phasing is accomplished by causing the valve actuators to execute lost-motion. The amount of lost-motion establishes the actual opening and closing phase angles for the valves. The amount of lost-motion of each actuator is established by the timing of the opening and closing of the corresponding solenoid valve. Oil that is pumped from the actuators can be stored in an accumulator that is connected to the gallery for subsequent use in replenishing the actuators.

Autocalibration of the camshaft phasing sensor of a closed-loop variable valve timing system of an internal combustion engine. The camshaft phasing adjustment mechanism comprises a cam that changes the camshaft phasing. This cam is provided with a dwell that occurs at a known true phasing of the camshaft. The cam is commanded to operate to the dwell, and the lack of change in the sensor output indicates when the dwell is reached. At this time the sensor output should exactly indicate the known camshaft phasing that is produced by the adjustment cam dwell. If it does not, the difference is calculated and forms an offset that is algebraically applied to the sensor output thereby calibrating the sensor.

Hydraulic engine valve lifter includes a pair of pistons defining a pressure chamber therebetween and a separate lash adjusting piston which defines a lash adjustment chamber with one of the pistons in the pair. One-way valve structures permit fluid to flow from the pressure chamber into the lash adjustment chamber thereby displacing the lash adjusting piston to, in turn, adjust valve lash. Motion damping functions during a downstroke of the lifter pistons are also provided by a valve damper chamber and fluid passageways between the pressure and damper chambers. Structure is provided which opens communication between the pressure and damper chambers during upstroke of the lifter pistons (thereby precluding motion damping) and then closes communication at a predetermined location during downstroke (thereby providing motion damping).
