Abstract: A bonded abrasive wheel comprises magnetizable abrasive particles retained in an organic binder. The bonded abrasive wheel has a central portion adjacent to a central hub, an outer circumference and a rotational axis extending through the central hub. The magnetizable abrasive particles adjacent to the central hub are aligned at an average angle of less than 35 degrees with respect to the rotational axis, and the magnetizable abrasive particles adjacent to the outer circumference of the bonded abrasive wheel are aligned at an average angle that is from 35 and 90 degrees, inclusive, with respect to the rotational axis. Methods of making a bonded abrasive wheel are also disclosed.

Abstract: In various embodiments, the present invention provides a structured abrasive article. The structured abrasive article includes an abrasive layer disposed on a backing. The abrasive layer includes shaped abrasive composites, which include abrasive particles dispersed in a polymeric binder. Each of the shaped abrasive composites independently includes a contoured base, which includes a first end disposed on the backing, a second end, and a plurality of sidewalls connecting the first end and the second end. A plurality of walls extends away from the contoured base. The abrasive article additionally includes a grinding surface, which includes a plurality of cusps and a plurality of facets that contact a recessed feature capable of being contained within a geometric plane. A portion of the recessed feature is disposed closer to the contoured base than is each of the cusps, and each cusp is formed by an intersection of two of the walls and a facet.

Abstract: Shaped ceramic abrasive particles include a first surface having a perimeter having a perimeter comprising at least first and second edges. A first region of the perimeter includes the second edge and extends inwardly and terminates at two corners defining first and second acute interior angles. The perimeter has at most four corners that define acute interior angles. A second surface is disposed opposite, and not contacting, the first surface. A peripheral surface is disposed between and connects the first and second surfaces. The peripheral surface has a first predetermined shape. Methods of making the shaped ceramic abrasive particles, and abrasive articles including them are also disclosed.

Abstract: Structured abrasive articles include a backing and shaped abrasive composites secured to the backing. The shaped abrasive composites include abrasive grits dispersed in a binder matrix. The shaped abrasive composites include a bottom surface and a top surface opposite and not contacting the bottom surface, and at least three sidewalls abutting both the bottom and top surfaces and two other sidewalls. In one embodiment, at least two cusps are formed by the top surface and individual sidewalls. In another embodiment, the top surface includes at least two triangular facets that contact at least two respective sidewalls and at least two cusps. The top surface includes at least one interior recessed portion nearer the cusps than the bottom surface. Methods of abrading a workpiece using the structured abrasive article are also disclosed.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods of making a vitreous bond abrasive article and a metal bond abrasive article. An abrasive article preform is produced by an additive manufacturing sub-process comprising the deposition of a layer of loose powder particles in a confined region and selective heating via conduction or irradiation to heat treat an area of the layer of loose powder particles. The loose powder particles include abrasive particles and organic compound particles, as well as vitreous bond precursor particles or metal particles. The abrasive article preform produced by additive manufacturing is subsequently heated to provide the vitreous bond abrasive article comprising the abrasive particles retained in a vitreous bond material, or to provide the metal bond abrasive article. Also, the methods include receiving, by an additive manufacturing device having a processor, a digital object specifying data for an abrasive article, and generating the abrasive article with the manufacturing device.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides methods of making a vitreous bond abrasive article and a metal bond abrasive article. The methods include sequential steps. Step a) includes a subprocess including sequentially: i) depositing a layer of loose powder particles in a confined region; and ii) selectively applying heat via conduction or irradiation, to heat treat an area of the layer of loose powder particles. The loose powder particles include abrasive particles and organic compound particles, as well as vitreous bond precursor particles or metal particles. The layer of loose powder particles has substantially uniform thickness. Step b) includes independently carrying out step a) a number of times to generate an abrasive article preform comprising the bonded powder particles and remaining loose powder particles. Step c) includes separating remaining loose powder particles from the abrasive article preform. Step d) includes heating the abrasive article preform to provide the vitreous bond abrasive article comprising the abrasive particles retained in a vitreous bond material, or to provide the metal bond abrasive article. A method of making a metal bond abrasive optionally includes infusing an abrasive article preform with a molten lower melting metal and solidifying the molten lower melting metal to provide the metal bond abrasive article. The present disclosure further provides a vitreous bond abrasive article precursor and a metal bond abrasive article precursor.
