A brake system capable of implementing anti-skid and traction control operations has an electromagnetic valve for connecting a master cylinder to a wheel cylinder and for disconnecting the master cylinder from the wheel cylinder when anti-skid or traction control is executed. A piezo-electric hydraulic pump is provided for introducing high-pressure brake oil when anti-skid or traction control is executed. A pressure reduction valve selectively introduces and removes brake oil so that a desired wheel cylinder pressure can be attained when anti-skid or traction control is executed. A hydraulic switching valve is connected to the main oil pressure line parallel to the electromagnetic valve and allows pressure in the master cylinder to be opened to the wheel cylinder during a braking operation. The system also includes a unit for establishing one-way communication from the wheel cylinder to the master cylinder during anti-skid control to prevent pressure in the wheel cylinder from being higher than that in the master cylinder while preventing connection between the master cylinder and the wheel cylinder during traction control.

A second group of laminated, cylindrical, thin-plate piezoelectric elements is provided in the center of the first group and a working member is provided on the free end of the second group of elements that is not attached to the floating plate. A hydraulic chamber is formed in the cylinder chamber on the side of the floating plate opposite to the side on which the first and second groups of elements are provided, and the pressure in this hydraulic chamber pushes the floating plate in the direction of the fixed support member. Voltage is applied to the first and second groups of elements to expand and contract them thereby varying the distance between the floating plate and the fixed support member and varying the distance between the floating plate and the working member.

With the arrangement, shearing stresses caused by shearing of oil in the compressor can be suppressed to thereby reduce a loss in the torque of the compressor, and the maximum stress on the movable vanes can be limited below an allowable stress to improve the anti-breakage characteristics of the vanes.

An in-vehicle power transmission apparatus is equipped with a motor-generator working as an engine to drive a vehicle and a power split device made up of a plurality of power split rotors. A first one of the rotors is coupled to a driven wheel of the vehicle, while a second one of the rotors is coupled to an accessory such as an air compressor of an air conditioner. The speed of the second rotor is controllable independently of that of the driven wheel. This eases restrictions on the supply of power produced by the generator-motor to the accessory. Alternatively, the rotors are so linked that when the speed of the first rotor is not zero (0), the speed of the second rotor has one of zero (0) and a value other than zero (0), thus ensuring the stability in supplying the power to drive the vehicle to the accessory.
