摘要: A laser frequency conversion device employs a dual resonant optical cavity in which closed optical paths exist for both the pump beam and the generated beam. The optical cavity is designed so that the optical paths overlap the acceptance volume in phase space for coupling power from the pump beam into the output beam. At least one of the beams is pumped by an external laser which is aligned and mode matched to the cavity mode. The frequency of the pump laser or the cavity resonance modes is selected, generally by adjustment, to cause buildup of optical power at the pump frequency. The temperature and the angle of the nonlinear material are selected for phase match in the nonlinear interaction within the material. The frequencies of the modes near the output frequency are independently selected to cause buildup of optical power at the output frequency.

摘要: The present invention is an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) which combines a singly resonant oscillator (SRO) configuration with a buildup cavity and uses optical output of a buildup cavity as feedback to injection lock a source laser. The result is an easily tuned OPO with a low pump power threshold without the requirement for active electronic control of the laser and/or the OPO resonator. In particular, specific embodiments of the invention employ a semiconductor diode laser to pump the OPO. The emission from the single longitudinal mode diode laser is transversely mode matched into the buildup cavity where the circulating power can build up to hundreds of times the output power of the diode. This high circulating power traverses the OPO crystal at a point of focus, producing a high enough intensity for operation of the OPO. At least one of the generated waves is also resonated in the SRO configuration. Either or both of the generated waves can be made to emerge from the resonator at the desired output mirror for use in applications.

摘要: Embodiments of wavelength tunable lasers are disclosed. The wavelength tunable lasers include thermo-optic organic material that has an index of refraction that can quickly vary in response to changes in temperature. By controlling the temperature in the thermo-optic organic material through the use of heaters or coolers, the wavelength tunable lasers and the integrated optical components can be quickly and selectively tuned over a broad range of wavelengths with high spectral selectivity.

摘要: An asymmetric waveguide pair (1440) with a differential thermal response has an optical coupling frequency that may be thermo-optically tuned. Tuning may also be accomplished by applying an electric field (1445) across a liquid crystal portion (1442) of the waveguide structure. The waveguide pair may include a grating and be used as a frequency selective coupler for an optical resonator. The differential waveguide pair may also be used as a temperature or electric field sensor, or it may be used in a waveguide array to adjust a phase relationship, e.g. in an arrayed waveguide grating.

摘要: Laser source including materials with negative index of refraction dependence on temperature and with temperature independent coincidence between cavity modes and a set of specified frequencies such as DWDM channels in telecommunications applications. The free spectral range may be adjusted to equal a rational fraction of the specified frequency interval. The operating frequency may be defined by a frequency selective feedback element that is thermo-optically tuned by the application of heat from an actuator without substantially tuning the cavity modes. The operating frequency may be induced to hop digitally between the specified frequencies. In a particular embodiment, semiconductor amplifier and polymer waveguide segments form a linear resonator with a thermo-optically tuned grating reflector. In a further embodiment, an amplifier and two waveguides from a tunable grating assisted coupler form a ring resonator. Tuning may also be accomplished by means of applying an electric field across a liquid crystal portion of the waveguide structure within the grating.

摘要: The invention has multiple embodiments and applications including a digitally tunable laser source, a tapered waveguide, a lensed waveguide, and a tunable laser array. Also described are methods for making and tuning these devices. The laser source includes materials with negative index of refraction dependence on temperature and with temperature independent coincidence between resonator modes and a set of specified frequencies such as DWDM channels in telecommunications applications. The free spectral range may be adjusted to equal a rational fraction of the specified frequency interval. An advantageous embodiment of a tapered waveguide may be used to efficiently couple different size waveguides, such as in a resonator containing both a semiconductor diode amplifier waveguide and a planar waveguide structure for coupling to an optical fiber. An advantageous embodiment of a lensed planar waveguide may be used to efficiently couple to a different size waveguide such as a semiconductor diode amplifier waveguide.
