Described herein is a process for preparing melt stable polyarylates having a reduced viscosity of from about 0.4 to greater than 1.0 dl/g which comprises reacting a diester derivative of a dihydric phenol with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid to produce a polyarylate having a reduced viscosity of from about 0.5 to greater than 1.0 dl/g, and then adding a stabilizing amount of an aromatic phenol to the polyarylate to form a polyarylate substantially free of anhydride linkages.

Process for making such copolyesters by reacting polyethylene terephthalate with p-acetoxybenzoic acid in a solvent, first at a temperature below 240.degree. C. to product a fragmented polyester, raising the temperature to split off acetic acid, then adding more acetoxybenzoic acid to raise the oxybenzoate content to more than 80 mole %.

Bis(N-substituted phthalimide)ethers are synthesized in a one-step process by heating a compound of the formula (I): ##STR1## with a catalytic amount of an alkali or alkaline earth metal carbonate in a polar aprotic solvent under ether-forming conditions, and recovering the bis(N-substituted phthalimide)ether from the reaction mixture. R.sub.1 is hydrogen; a monovalent organic radical selected from a lower alkyl group having from 1 to about 10 carbon atoms, preferably from 1 to about 5 carbon atoms; or an aromatic hydrocarbon radical, or halogenated derivative thereof, having from about 6 to about 20 carbon atoms. X is a leaving group.

This invention relates to moldable polycarbonate compositions and in particular to moldable polycarbonates which have ordered alternating repeating units derived from bis-(3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)sulfone (TMBS) and 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (Bisphenol A) dihaloformate, or ordered, alternating repeating units derived from bis-(3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone (TMBS) dihaloformate and a bisphenol compound such as 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane (Bisphenol A). Such polycarbonates exhibit improved hydrolytic stability and also excellent processability in molding applications.
