摘要: A multicore optical component and corresponding methods of converting a linearly or circularly polarized Gaussian beam of light into a radially or azimuthally polarized beam of light are provided. The multicore optical component comprises a plurality of birefringent, polarization maintaining elliptical cores. The elliptical cores collectively define an azimuthally varying distribution of major axes where the orientation of the major axis of a given elliptical core is given by φ=(180/N)*n+θ where n is the core number and θ is any angle greater than 0°.

摘要: A system for passively scrambling and unscrambling a, pulse optical signal transmitted through a multi-mode optical fiber is provided. The system includes a scrambling unit connected between a signal receiving end of said transmission fiber and an optical signal source that includes an optical fiber which creates a differential delay between two groups of optical modes of the signal that is at least one bit period long such that said optical signal is passively scrambled, and an unscrambling unit connected to a signal transmitting end of said transmission fiber having an optical fiber that counteracts said differential delay between said two groups of optical modes of the signal such that said optical signal is passively unscrambled. The scrambling unit optical fiber has an alpha profile with a complementary perturbation that creates the differential delay between two groups of optical modes of the signal, and the unscrambling unit optical fiber has an alpha profile with reversal complementary perturbation that counteracts the differential delay between said two groups of optical modes of the signal. Alternatively, the scrambling and unscrambling units may have the combination of a mode splitter that splits the signal into two different groups of optical modes, and a pair of optical fibers that conduct the two groups of optical modes in parallel, the fibers being of different lengths to create or to counteract a differential delay in the two groups of modes.

摘要: An optical fiber switch in accordance with the present invention includes an optical fiber, a gate signal generating system, and a coupling system. The optical fiber has a birefringence between 10.sup.-5 and 10.sup.-6 and an effective area of at least 40 square microns. The generating system generates a gating signal having a power level which induces non-linear birefringence in the optical fiber causing an input signal in the optical fiber to switch polarization modes. The coupling system couples the input signal and the gating signal into the optical fiber. The optical fiber in the optical switch is designed to minimize non-linear effects which would degrade an input signal in the optical fiber switch. In particular, the optical fiber switch is designed to reduce the amount of power required by the gating signal to switch the input signal in the optical fiber, thus reducing the possibility of the fiber fuse and the generation of higher order solitons through Raman effects.

摘要: A display device comprising a display panel, a diffusing member positioned between the display panel and an observer, and a directional backlight wherein the directional backlight comprises a half angle divergence equal to or less than 15°. The display cover is preferably configured to shift an image displayed on the display panel relative to an observer to obscure a bezel surrounding the display panel. The use of a directional backlight and a diffusing display cover plate allows for a very small gap between the display panel and the display cover plate.

摘要: Bezel-concealing display covers and display devices are disclosed. In one example, a bezel-concealing display cover includes a bezel and a display panel includes a perimeter portion having a first surface and a second surface such that the perimeter portion is configured to be offset from the bezel of the display device by a gap GA. The bezel-concealing display cover further includes a first array of prisms on at least one of the first surface or the second surface of the perimeter portion that extend from an edge of the perimeter portion to a distance L. Each prism of the first array of prisms has a prism angle θ, and the first array of prisms is configured to shift a portion of an image proximate the bezel produced by the display panel such that the shifted portion of the image appears over the bezel to an observer.
