    Abstract: An optical device and systems using an optical device are provided, where the optical device may be configured for collimating incoming light rays. The optical device may include a host medium substantially comprised of a transparent material and an array of substantially transparent structures embedded within the host medium. The structures of the array each include a convex side presented to the incoming light rays and a concave side that passes light rays through toward the output face of the host medium, collimating the rays. Multiple stages of arrays may be provided in the optical device, typically with lengthening aspect ratios and increasing indexes of refraction in a direction from the input face toward the output face. The systems may use the optical device for using an exterior light to illuminate an interior space in a building or to generate power.

    Abstract: A high efficiency daylight directing structure for application on fenestration deploys closely spaced macroscopic bars of transparent resin to eliminate different forms of glare. The spaced apart surfaces provide for efficient reflection of selective incident light, by TIR or metallic surfaces, via the ultra-smooth native surfaces from a mold or casting process. A close spacing is readily obtained in various attachment methods to boost efficiency. The fabrication method allows selective deposition of absorbing layers, such as by of painting/printing between alternating native optical surface to provide one way transparency at high angles of incidence. The bars are supported on at least one common planar surface by transparent support member with an optical quality adhesive material filling any imperfection in the bars common planar surface that form in fabrication.

    Abstract: When daylighting into a building interior, this daylighting structure attenuates the brightness of a setting sun or a winter-time incoming light of small elevation angles, and causes the incoming light to be diffusely emitted toward the ceiling surface or into a deep portion of the indoor space domain regardless of the elevation angle thereof. An incoming light (E20) of 20° in elevation angle is caused to be diffusely emitted toward the ceiling surface on the internal upper side of the building through the refraction and reflection actions mediated by a light-transmitting material mounted in a horizontal direction opening of a wall. The light-transmitting material comprises: an outdoor region curved surface wherethrough the incoming light is refracted and let into the interior of the light-transmitting material in a focused form; a lower side reflection surface internally reflecting the refracted incoming light; and an indoor region curved surface wherefrom the internally reflected light is refracted and emitted toward the ceiling surface in a diffused form. Also disclosed are the installation wherein the light-transmitting material is inclined from the illustrated horizontal state, and the installation of a plurality of the light-transmitting materials, each in upper and lower directions and left and right directions.

    Abstract: A flexible sheet-form optical system, referenced to as a light redirecting fabric, which has a fabric-like behavior and light redirecting properties. The light redirecting fabric comprises a soft and flexible sheet of optically transmissive material, such as plasticized polyvinyl chloride. A surface of the flexible sheet includes a plurality of parallel slits having spaced-apart walls configured to reflect light by means of a total internal reflection. At least a portion of daylight incident onto the sheet is internally redirected at bend angles greater than the angle of incidence. Disclosed also are a method and apparatus for making the light redirecting fabric. The method includes steps of mechanical slitting of the flexible sheet with a blade, elastic stretch-elongation of the sheet along a direction perpendicular to the slits, and making at least a portion of the sheet elongation irreversible.
