The method involves using a removable unidirectional predicted temporal scaling frame communication along with intra-coded frames and/or inter-coded frames. The method involves the ability to selectively remove the temporal scaling frame(s) from being transmitted or decoded in order to satisfy, for example, power limits, data rate limits, computational limits or channel conditions. Examples presented include encoders, transcoders and decoders where the decision to drop the removable temporal scaling frames could be made.

This disclosure is directed to techniques for encoding and decoding transitional effects, i.e., visual video effects that are used to transition from a current scene of a multimedia sequence. According to the disclosed techniques, an encoding device detects a transitional effect associated with a multimedia sequence during the encoding of the multimedia sequence, and transmits information as part of an encoded multimedia sequence to identify the transitional effect associated with the encoded multimedia sequence to a decoder. The information may comprise metadata that can be used by the decoder to simulate or re-create the transitional effect. The decoder simulates a transitional effect in response to the information.

One example method of providing multimedia content includes receiving, at an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) enabled first electronic device, multimedia content from a content-providing electronic device via an IMS network, where the multimedia content has a first format. The method also includes converting, at the IMS-enabled first electronic device, the multimedia content from the first format to a second format that is different from the first format. The method further includes transmitting, from the IMS-enabled first electronic device to a second electronic device, the converted multimedia content in the second format, where the converted multimedia content is transmitted from the first electronic device to the second electronic device via a local network that is different from the IMS network.

Described herein are various techniques for gathering multimedia data from one or more sources and transmiting that data over a local network to one or more devices, thereby providing ubiquitous multimedia across the network. In one configuration, a device comprising a server receives multimedia data from one or more devices on a local network, creates a multiplex signal from the various multimedia data received from the devices, and wirelessly transmits the multiplex signal over the local network. The server is further configured wherein the multiplex signal comprises a plurality of logical channels, with at least one of the logical channels representing multimedia data received from one of the devices on the network. By then tuning into one or more of the logical channels of the transmitted multiplex signal, a device on the local network can present to a user multimedia data that originates from or resides on another device on the network. According to other configurations, the multiplex signal contains not only multimedia data retrieved from devices on a local network, but can also include multimedia data that originated from sources on a wide area network, such as the Internet or a cellular telephone network.

Techniques for video encoding and decoding channel switch frames (CSF) to enable acquisition and re/synchronization of the video stream while preserving compression efficiency is provided. Systems and methods to process multimedia data enabling channel switching are presented. The systems generate a CSF with one or more network adaptation layer (NAL) units as a random access point (RAP) frame. Back-to-back frames are transmitted which include the CSF and a non-RAP frame, each having the same frame ID number.
