An apparatus which attenuates a light signal polarized in a first direction. The apparatus includes a polarization rotation unit and an output unit. The polarization rotation unit rotates the polarization of the light signal to produce a polarization rotated light signal having a polarization component in the first direction and a polarization component in a second direction which is substantially 90 degrees with respect to the first direction. The output unit passes, as an output signal, the polarization component in the second direction of the polarization rotated light signal and blocks the polarization component in the first direction. The polarization rotation unit includes an electromagnet and a permanent magnet which apply magnetic fields in specific directions with respect to the light path. Various yoke constructions are provided for the electromagnet and the permanent magnet. A control circuit maintains the output power of the output signal at a constant level, or maintains a constant ratio between the power level of the output signal and the power level of the light signal before the polarization is rotated. The apparatus can have a wavelength dependent attenuation which compensates for the wavelength dependent gain of an optical amplifier.

The invention provides an optical wavelength multiplex transmission method wherein a band in the proximity of a zero dispersion wavelength of an optical fiber is used and optical signals are disposed at efficient channel spacings taking an influence of the band, the wavelength dispersion and the four wave mixing into consideration to realize an optical communication system of an increased capacity which is not influenced by crosstalk by FWM. When optical signals of a plurality of channels having different wavelengths are to be multiplexed and transmitted using an optical fiber, a four wave mixing suppressing guard band of a predetermined bandwidth including the zero-dispersion wavelength &lgr;0 of the optical fiber is set, and signal light waves of the plurality of channels to be multiplexed are arranged on one of the shorter wavelength side and the longer wavelength side outside the guard band.

An optical fiber transmission line capable of suppressing the generation efficiency of four wave mixing in transmitting wavelength multiplex signal light. The transmission line employs a single mode optical fiber in which a zero dispersion wavelength is varied in the longitudinal direction of the optical fiber more largely than manufacturing variations in manufacturing conditions of the optical fiber. The use of this optical fiber as the transmission line suppresses the generation efficiency of four wave mixing in transmitting the wavelength multiplex signal light to allow the transmission of the wavelength multiplex signal light with a reduced crosstalk.

An optical transmitter provided by the present invention comprises: a light source; a band-pass filter for filtering a light generated by the light source; a light splitting means for splitting a light output by the band-pass filter into at least two split lights; an optical receiving unit for converting one of the split lights into an electrical signal having a level proportional to the intensity of the split light; and a control means for receiving the electrical signal for use in controlling the wavelength of the light source so as to sustain the intensity of the split light at a fixed value. With the configuration described above, fluctuations in wavelength occurring on the transmitter side can be reduced. On the top of that, by applying this optical transmitter to a WDM system, a system cold start can be done with ease.

A dispersion compensator of the present invention includes a dispersion compensation fiber and a polarization conversion mirror. The dispersion compensation fiber has color dispersion of a sign opposite to the sign of the color dispersion of the optical fiber transmission line, and the length thereof is set so as to conform to the value of the color dispersion of the optical fiber transmission line. Light propagating in the optical fiber transmission line then propagates in the dispersion compensation fiber from a first end toward a second end of it and is supplied to the polarization conversion mirror. The light supplied to the polarization conversion mirror is converted into light of a polarization condition orthogonal and time-reversed to the polarization condition of the light supplied to the polarization conversion mirror, and propagates in the dispersion compensation fiber from the second end toward the first end of it. This enables compensation not only for color dispersion but also for polarization mode dispersion.

A direct modulation PSK system and method, in a coherent optical fiber transmission system, in which an injection current supplied to a laser diode is adapted to be directly varied is disclosed. In this system or method, a modulating current pulse is superposed on a bias current for the laser diode so that a specified phase condition may be satisfied. Thereby, a differential coding circuit and an external modulator being indispensable for a DPSK system become unnecessary and, in addition, the system becomes less susceptible to the influence of wavelength dispersion than the DPSK system and able to reproduce the carrier.
